rye flour instead of brf in pf cakes

ok this doesnt make sense. Why do you make cakes with brf instead of ground of rye berries? I never seen anyone make grain spawn from brown rice, and it seems like everyone perfers rye berries in grain spawns so wouldnt it make sense to grind up rye berries and use that instead of brown rice when making cakes?

because I think one of the main points of PF tek is to be able to complete it without a pressure cooker. rye requires a pressure cooker.
plus, then you would also have to get in to dealing with higher risk of contams since you use dry vermiculite as a contam barrier with BRF cakes.
but ive often thought of trying grain cakes.
those are just 2 guesses, im by no means an expert.

If you have a pressure cooker there is no need to grind up the rye berries at all. The BRF method is for people without pressure cookers (IMO) and its a great way to do it. Rye and WBS are great as well, they require pressure cookers though, and i don't see the benefit of grinding them down and adding vermiculite when its not necessary for them in the first place. Seems like extra effort to achieve the same result.

I completely agree,if you have a pressure cooker there is no real need to make cakes anymore unless you just for some odd reason do not wish to move to bulk or are just doing some novelty experiment with cakes, once you go grain you wont go back and they longer you wait to do it the more you will be kicking yourself in the ass that you hadn't done it sooner...Click the link in my Sig that says "Read this" for more pf tek information from me

Rye flour works great for cakes if you have the pressure cooker. Rye flour is easy to find at grocery stores and it's cheap.

Many people, including a few very respected members, have claimed to have success with steaming rye flour cakes. I have tried steaming wheat and rye flour cakes and all contamed.
Their explanations as to why you can steam flour and not grain do not seem logical to me. They usually say that because the flour is pulverised that the endospores are exposed to the heat. This makes no sense to me since the grains are small and heat will transfer to the core of the grain very quickly, the core will also be hydrated after not too long.
My own theory as to why white flours or pastas would possibly work is that they are bleached, and this may destroy some of the endospores. In saying that my white flour wheat cakes did contam.

Some do, it tends to stick together so is not shakeable.

You are going to get much much more than one mushroom. With 24 cakes that are 1 pint and 12 that are 1/2 pints, holy crap that could be a lot of mushies.

Ive tried substituting Rye for rice in the cakes and found they colonize more slowly and don't seem to support as many flushes as brf. Combining equal parts rye flour/rice/wbs as a substitute for just brf seems to work better and support larger flushes.
And yes, I have records here somewhere that support that.

I wanted to convince you that you must learn to make every act count, since you are going to be here for only a short while;in fact, too short for witnessing all the marvels of it.

Not entirely. Brown rice has a naturally very low endospore count. Permeating the entire grain, much less flour, is not difficult.
Rye does not have the same low count. General consensus is you'll need to PC, though I'm sure boiled jars won't turn out terribly.
