Terrarium and Humidity Question
    #717859 - 07/02/02 10:31 AM (21 years, 8 months ago)

I have 60 qt. clear rubbermaid container hooked up to a Walgreens coolmist ultrasonic humidifier by two plastic hoses. Within the larger container is a shoeboxed size rubbermaid container with a layer of horse poo, two broken up PF style cakes and another layer of horse poo. There is healthy, rhizomorphic growth ripping through the dung. I cased one half of the container with coco coir basically becuase I dont know what Im doing and the mycelium has colonized about 60% of the coir. This has been the case for about two weeks now. I put a flourescent light above it and basically it gets turned on when the sun comes up and turned of when the sun goes down. Is there any reason why Im not seeing pins? Any help or follow up questions to any specifics that I didnt cover would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

James

not sure.....need more info.

did you let the horse poo fully colonize inside an incubator?

was the horse poo fully colonized before you put on the Coco Coir?

what is the humidity and temp inside your fruiting chamber?

are you fanning at all? using a bubbler? might be lacking air exchange.

your horse poo might be too wet....and this is a major factor in failure with horse poo.

you would get better and faster colonization if you mixed all the horse poo with the cakes..... rather than use layers.

good luck!

I just put it under my bed for about a week and took it out when I saw a lot of growth. The temps range between 68-75 and the humidity is around 99%. The poo could be too wet. There are teeny tiny water droplets on the mycelium. I do fan twice a day. It was about 90% colonized when I put the coir on but that was on only half of the box. So what should I do? The poo only side is about 99% colonized.

I would take a look at how you have your humidifer hooked up. If water droplets are forming on your casing, well, thats not good at all.

Yeah the tubes need to be going up vertical at some angle, so water particles don't make it into the chamber, just the hot air, because hot air rises. remember science class?

Cool or not, the vapor will still condensate on the tube walls, hence the angle to keeps water from dripping on your cakes/casings.
