question on drying
    #7182705 - 07/16/07 10:21 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

KK I just harvested 2 casings first flushes and for drying them I used a large plastic tub container with damprid all on the bottom and a chicken wire level halfway up the tub for the mushies. My question is is there a way I can dry to cracker dry without all of the morphing and shriveling that happens? Like some of my mushes were deformed by the chicken wire itself like the weight of them was pushing them into the wire. Also is it bad if i dont have an area at the bottom for water to collect? Thanks in advance

You wont have water to collect they don't really drip so don't worry about that. They are getting 90% smaller asking them not to shrivel and morph is like asking your penis to look the same in cold water. Ain't gonna happen.

Right, and its best to fan dry those babies overnight before putting them into the damprid container. Drying fresh mushrooms with damprid takes forever.

thanks alot for the help  follow up question though..
if i fan for a dayish before i throw them in with the damprid container will they not morph as much?
ooo yeah also if i put a paper towel between the chicken wire and mushies will they still lose moisture through the towel?

1. Bottom line is taking moisture out of the shrooms makes them shrivel no matter what

2. A desiccant is used to absorb the moisture in the air around it. So it sucks moisture out of the air, and the air having lost that moisture sucks moisture out of the shroom. It's a vicious cycle :tongue2:. A Paper towel is not needed. Having the shrooms open to air on as many points as possible is best. But yes, they will still dry on the towel.

They're going to shrivel up a bit no matter what you do - that's what happens when you dehydrate mushies. If you've seen dehydrated fruits like apricots, pineapple, etc., or even beef jerky, you'll see that this is normal. When you take out all the water, they are going to shrink. Just fan dry them for a day or two and finish with the desiccant, or invest the $40 or so for a food dehydrator, which is certainly the best option.

If they are drooping around the wire and sticking a lot you may want to find a finer screen (a section of cheap/found/borrowed window screen rather than chicken wire). The paper towel might work, too. It probably won't hurt anything, so why not try it? Even using an oven to dry hasn't lowered potency noticably, IME. Just keep the oven on the lowest setting with the door cracked and your goodies on the top rack.

Most of all, it doesn't hurt to experiment a little bit. Once you have amstered the basic techniques and are able to grow, you can always just grow more if you screw something up!  If you make your own prints and LCs and use cheap substrates (WBS, rye if you can find it cheap) it is educational to try different techniques. Everyone has their own favorite methods and little tweaks.

Dehydrator is the way to go, i was hardcore against it till i actually tried it. (because i wasn't going to risk potency loss, but after doing a little test with the dehydrator I noticed no loss in potency, so if there is any, you gotta be really sensitive to notice it - BTW my dehydrator works at 160F, so its quite hot, there are others that work at like 90 degrees or so, but I'd just get whatevers cheaper)

Panty hose stolen from the neighborhood laundry mat not only works well, but earns you some punk rock points too!

I simply lay mine on a plastic tray and let them air dry. Simple, easy, and free.
