i've never heard of brown sugar being used. the rumor probably came from brown rice flour, which is one of the most commonly used substrate ingerdients.

I haven't ever heard of using bown sugar, perhaps in the agar or in the colonizing media it might be used to feed the myscelium. I know that some cultures are responsive to sugars, most grains have natural sugar in them.
