corn cob as a no-no
    #7175720 - 07/14/07 05:12 PM (16 years, 8 months ago)

Just as a Informative nugget. Corn cob is an extremely hard sub. to work with IMO. After many attempts I am calling it quits. I had read up on some corn cob formulas promising great results.. All I got were contams after contams. Not worth the time when there are so many easier spawns to work with that rival or supersede.

Corn cob is not a spawn material. It's bulk substrate material so needs to be used in bulk. The kernels have to be removed. I works well with cubes when mixed with another substrate, such as straw, horse manure, coir or compost.

Oyster mushrooms can do fairly well on corn cobs alone.

What keeps them from contaminating in bulk. The mycelium I have gotten to grow on cob has been sparse like it has a hard time colonizing.

Did you pasteurize them? They should be hydrated by soaking, then drained and pasteurized at 140F to 160F for an hour. If you sterilize, they're very prone to contamination.

Sweetness. I feel like a brainless buffoon. Thanks! Still have loads of the stuff. I always sterilized jar style and would attempt Lc inoculations from healthy lc's. But the end result was always a slow growing fuzz. Never thought just to spawn to, after pasteurization.
I always soaked and rinsed repeatedly. Thanks.

I have never even though of using corn cob,I used cracked corn a while back just for the hell of it and I wouldn't recommend it,the results were mediocre at best next to the rye I grew with it side by side

As far as yield it crapped out for you? Have never noticed any difference in cracked corn, wbs, and rye, compared to one another.

#1 Rye
#2 Wild birdseed
#3 Cracked corn

Rye is my favorite but I'm starting to love bird seed seeing as its 40 lbs for 8 bucks and almost just as good as rye now that I can actually get the moisture right(This took me months)

Cracked corn I always used once,I didn't really like it all that much at all.especially since I had to throw verm in to balance the moisture and I hate verm:thumbdown:

RR's right. Best cubies I've ever had I found at an old ladies house in central Tx growing outside on milo which is made of cow poo, cobs, stalks and kernels. Very big, very potent, very beautiful cubies.

Do you rinse, soak, repeat then soak. Or the cooking method others use. I personaly rinse, soak, and repeat, with a final 4 hr. soak.
No exploded grains, non-greasy.( Of course I drain well and air dry for an hour or so. Perfect every time)(WBS that is)
