PRE-HYDRATED, STERILIZED, DEHYDRATED, RE-HYDRATED SORGHUM
    #6533612 - 02/05/07 02:56 PM (17 years, 14 days ago)

CONFUSING TITLE......RIGHT........

To explain:

Sometime back, I accidentally punctured a large spawn bag of sorghum, removing it (hot) from an AA 941.

So, I slit the bag open & emptied it into a stainless steel mixing bowl, with the idea of tossing the seed out in the yard for wild birds to eat. I sat the open bowl in the pantry, to cool & forgot about it, for a few days.

When I remembered it & looked:
First thing I noticed was the seed appeared bone dry.
(bink, the little "idea" experiment light goes off in agar's feeble mind)

With a test in mind, I slid the metal bowl in the oven, on 300F & left it for an hour. Then, allowed it to cool in the oven, overnight. Object being, to insure seed was in fact, BONE DRY.

The following day, I dropped a couple quarts (volume) of the seed in a pot of boiling water, turned off the heat & allowed the seed to steep for a couple hours.

The object being, to re-hydrate the seed.

I then drained the seed, allowed it to air dry about 20 minutes.
Then, filled 2 quart jars 3/4 full of the seed & applied a G/E & ported lid to the jars.

The lid being 1/4 turn loose.

I then placed the quart jars on a trivet, in a pot of mildly boiling water, about 2 inches deep & placed a lid on the pot.

I let the jars STEAM, for 1 hour.
Removed jars & tightened the lids.
Allowed jars to cool overnight.

The following day, I inoculated both jars with an LC.
Then, placed both jars in a filing cabinet, at room temperature.

Being ancient, medicated & sometimes absent minded.
I forgot about the jars, until today.
(about 12 or 14 days, I did not keep track, nor shake them)

Okay, they colonized rock solid, without contamination.

WHAT'S THE POINT, YOU MIGHT ASK, NOW

Point is, an entrepreneurial vendor;
with an AA 941 STERILIZER (w/insert).

Could sterilize about 6 gallons of prehydrated sorghum, in the insert.
no bags, jars, nothing.

Once sterilized, the insert content could be emptied into a metal tray.

The tray placed in an oven, on low heat, until the seed is BONE DRY.
Then, that seed could be cooled, bagged up, in plastic bags;
heat sealed & SOLD, by the bag, lb, or whatever.

The object being, I bet there is a NICHE.
New folks who want to do bulk seed/grain spawn to a bulk substrate.
MUST OWN A PC, TO DO SO.
Otherwise, they are limited to PF style cakes.

Pre-sterilized seed need only be re-hydrated, jar'ed up & steamed.
No PC required.

Time for a BONG HIT,

Nice find agar.

That could save a lot in shipping costs also.

can it be completely tested true...?

even with a bone dry steralized seed, i can totally see someone fuk'n it up. and if it is sterilized indeed... why would you have to even steam the jar?

Not to mention the fact that you innoc'd with a LC. When most (consumers) would generally innoc with MS solution.

I'd like to see some more tests....:thumbup:

You on the bong today.(joke)
You are right, anybody can F/U anything.
But, this is pretty easy, not to.

1st hydration germinates endospores, inside the seed.
2nd, sterilization in a PC, kills them.
3rd, seed is removed from PC, in NON-STERILE environment.
4th, seed is dried & bagged up, in NON-STERILE environment.

5th, Later seed is hydrated, in hot water, air dried & jar'ed up.

6th, STEAMING,
kills what little may exist ON IT, from limited exposure to NON-STERILE environment

I only did this, this one time.
But, a vendor could run multiple tests.
To insure this was not a fluke.
Given the circumstance, I would wager, it is not a fluke.

SPAWNMATE ( http://www.spawnmate.com/ )
is treated much the same way.
It is not re-sterilized, prior to adding to a substrate.

Multispore inoculation, would by it's nature.
Be a bit slower, as spores have to germinate, first.
But, premise is the same, with either M/S, or L/C inoculate.

This was a simple test, to see if it would work.
It did & the whole world is welcome to test it, all they want.
Just try to help out the community, not "patent" some idea.

bump. in case any entrepreneurs missed this ^
reading this thread gave me my own little"bink"moment.

use an "insert"to sterilize grain, wbs in my case.well,my pc didn't come with an insert, thought of maybe using a smaller saucepan inside the pc,but would have entailed bustin the handle of a perfectly good pan.so..rip.ahaa...cut the leg off a tyvek body suit,we all got them laying around ,yeah?
tied off one end, filled with hydrated wbs and tied off the other end and pc'd for 2.5 hours.
too long perhaps?seeing as the entire surface was exposed to the environs...

what's the point.
in my little 6 liter pc i can only sterilize ~1.25 kg of (hydrated) wbs at a time using four old coffee jars w/holes inoculation ports, et hassle!
i doubled the amount using the tyvek leg, and may just get away with using a non-autoclavable bag for the "steaming" step.
we'll see.
not mean to hi-jack agar, but you put the thought in my mind.thanks.

is it worth all the work involved...

PC's are really not THAT expensive. It'll be great to give to someone with little to no patience... or is just flat out dumb. (oh yea, they're out there)

i like the idea about freezing it better...:thumbup:

I look at money spent on a good PC as an investment, not an expense,If you are one of those people who refuses to spend the money on one that you need to find another hobby,Spend the money when your starting out and get everything you need.Once you have everything your good.I spent a hell of allot of money in the beginning. Now I never need to buy anything cause I have everything.I don't remember the last time I needed to buy anything except more rye and coir

I dont see how people think it wont work. By killing the endospores you effectively have endospore free grain so can treat it like rice. I was talking of PCing dry grain a while back.
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/1272709#1272709

I think the grain does need to be wet, but probably not up to the normally required levels. Therefore you could cram grains into the PC, way more than would fit in jars. Then a barrel could be fitted with a element for a bulk steamer.
In that linked thread I also suggest buying a giant AA, then doing many kg of grain, then bringing it back. The grain could be frozen or dried for later use, if you do not have enough jars on hand.

Rye grass seed would probably dry out in the sun. Rye grass seed is special since it doesnt explode. This has advantages, you could get a big 50gallon container and fit an element, put a huge amount of RGS in a pillowcase. This could be boiled up over a course of days to fractionally sterilize it, ensuring it is fully submerged. Then leave it to dry in the sun or oven and it will only need steaming.

I think it would be a good seller and have mentioned it before in the vendors forum. If a vendor was to do it there is a far simpler way, just use food irradiation. If you knew somebody working in a lettuce farm you might be able to get them to pass a few sacks of grain into the machine that does it.
