HELP! how can I solve this problem....?
    #7172458 - 07/13/07 07:30 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Ok, so ive been reading and watching everything i can for the past month or so, have succesfully inoculated and colonized my first 10 jars ever (BRF & Verm). I birthed them about 3 days ago onto perlite inside a clear sterilite tub with a few holes drilled about an inch under the perlite. The next day, I watched RR's video and tried the dunk & roll (was this ok to do the second day and not immediately after?), anyways i let them soak overnight u know, did everything as explained although not much verm stuck on when i rolled (you can see a lot of white)...also i rolled in the morning before work so i was pressed for time...waited 30 min. and sprayed heavily with water/h202. came home again a couple hours later and repeated, then went back to work. didnt spray again for about 7 hours (till i got home). Was this ok??? Next, i noticed that the humidity kept well above 95% (99 to be exact and my hygrometer reads 4 degrees less than actual (salt test). So that was good, but the temperature here in S. Florida is killer and even with my small window unit running full blast the lowest i could get it in the day was 80 degrees (not counting while im at work, A/C off (no option to leave it on)...in that case its around 85-87 degrees F. Keep in mind that I usually work 9am to 6 or 7 pm during which time i cannot mist, air out, or control temperature (frozen bottles of water or ice packs would surely melt long before 10 hours are up)...

Anyways, yesterday i said "i need to solve this temperature problem"...the only solution i found was a small portable air conditioner from walmart that has a reservoir for ice, air blows thru the ice and voila, colder temp. The thing is great cuz its really small. I have some of that flexible foil lookin dryer hose coming out of the unit and into the lid of my FC (4" diameter hose w/ held to FC lid by duct taoe (instead of 4" hole on lid though, 4 small 1/4" holes to control cold airflow.) Also, several holes on foil hose to also control how much cold air gets in. Now, since the ice in the small unit will obviously melt before i get home from work, I bought a 45 quart styrofoam cooler, cut a hole in the bottom, took off ice-container lid on A/C unit, and put the cooler on top. This way, I can just fill the entire cooler (with free ice from work) in the morning and it will do the job...right now it IS doing a great job...at keeping the temperature down. But, now the humidity goes way down when the thing is on. When its off, humidity jumps to 99% but temp goes up too...the only time my crappy window a/c brings the temp down enough is at night...which is not good enough i assume. Today i also put extra holes on lid of FC and sides, along with a glass of water, bubble stone and small air pump. I've been reading and searching and searching for answers to my quesions and cant find any specifics...so im HOPING i will get an answer and will greatly appreciate it. Sorry for the long post its also my first...no pics so had to explain everything. I tend to overexplain everything anyways...just me. Anyhow....basically my question is what am i doing wrong, and how can i solve my having to work for 10 hours without misting airing and at the same time keeping the temperature down (quitting is unfortunately not an option)...a humidifier would solve two of these problems i believe...but the main one is the temperature...oh yeah and have i done anything wrong after birthing??..thanks a lot for reading and PLEASE HELP!!!

Oh yeah, and i would love something simple like RR's way w/ perlite and all the holes and everything... i understand he was in a work-situation as well...but the temperature! ahhh.....

oh yeah it doesnt matter but just fyi, in case it might or w/...to compensate for the extra ice from the 45qt cooler i removed the water drainage cap from portable a/c unit and attached some tubing which runs down into a 50qt tub (which everything sits on.). oh and with the unit on, the RH drops to less than 85% (into 70s if left long enough). thanks again!

Just put a block or two of ice directly into the FC when you leave for work, and forget the cooler. It will dry out your terrarium, which will be worse than a few hours of high temperature. Cubes fruit in nature in the 80's anyway, so you'll be fine.

Thanks RR...I tried it and i worked great, but the ice melted within a couple hours and the temp. shot up to near 90 at one point. Being the nervous first time grower i am i took apart a mini-fridge (thermostat, compressor, and the freezer section), replaced thermostat with an air conditioner thermostat for higher temperature control and put the straightened out frezzer (looks like a flat rectangle now with the gas supply and thermostat cable sticking thru the FC lid) right inside the FC. This is working great and i thought i would share it in case anyone else has the same problem with hot temps. Again thanks for the quick response im sure I will have many more questions as i plan to move onto edibles and exotics once the "training wheels" are off!!
