The Ethics Of Survival
    #7172102 - 07/13/07 07:19 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Imagine you're on a lifeboat with 10 kids but only enough food for five of them to survive until rescue. If you feed all 10, all 10 will starve to death. If you push five overboard to their death, the other five will survive.

Is it right to deliberately kill the five so the others can live?

Could you do that if you were the only adult in charge of the boat and if so, could you live with yourself afterward?

2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

nope, can't do it. The ultimate ethical thing to do would be to sacrifice your own body and tell the kids to eat your flesh.

Actually, if you had some means of preparing food, it would be more ethical to drown two of the kids and allow eight kids to survive by consuming them. :smirk:

Seriously, though.... that would be one killer game of rock, paper, scissors.

nope, can't do it.

You'd relegate all 10 kids to certain death?

Are you sure? They probably would all die if it were not for my overwhelming leadership and decision-making skills. :smirk:

Sure, if you decide it to be right. It isn't as though there is an objective code of ethics, and it seems to be the reasonable decision to make.

I'd do it if it was necessary, and I could live with myself afterwards. If I didn't do it, I wouldn't be able to live with myself afterwards.

I'm imagining I'm on a lifeboat. But I can't imagine how I'd know when I'm going to be rescued and would be able to figure out how much food I'd have.

I couldnt kill em, just thinking about looking into their eyes...I'd rather just share the food and enjoy, while talking about our favorite things we did in life - Enjoy the moment!

It would be a strange set of unfolding events having to teach a bunch of hungry children how to consume you -
that is, after you figure out a successful way of killing yourself without falling overboard....

There is ALWAYS going to be one kid that calls dibs on the wishbone....!

It is really hard making an honest accurate decision for something like this....
One of the kids might be the McGuiver(sp?) type that can make an 8-cylinder boat motor out of a stick of bubblegum....

Qutie. Indubitably. We agree that we do not disagree, on that which we agree with ourselves.

they all wouldn't starve at the SAME time.

wait till the first one dies, and then BAM!

also that way when you are rescued and get back, the parents of the eaten children won't sue you for killing and eating them.

you know it'd happen.
