I have 5 pedro cuttings that have succumbed to black weeping rot (from the way it sounds) I have not seen them yet but they were being stored at a friends house and when he came home from vacation he called me and said they are all black and nasty. I no longer plan on eating them but i was curious as to whether or not they can be salvaged. I was thinking of doing an a/b extraction but i don't want to risk anything playing with rot like this. Is an a/b a bad idea here?

They need to be stored in a dry place. Never store them wrapped in plastic, leave them open to the air. That may have been the problem or else one rotted and it spread to the others. That usually takes a while to happen. I'd toss them and chalk it up to experience. Nasties from the mold will inevitably get into the extract. Keep them separate next time, not close together.

they were kept on a desk next to a window to keep them in the sun and well ventilated. When my buddy got home from aruba they were thoroughly nastified. I have never had problem with cacti before but i'm pretty bummed to lose 5 cuttings. If its a bad idea to extract i am going to compost them and feed them to future cacti. maybe mesc doped compost will work out to be beneficial..

Wouldnt that be a bad idea spreading the mold around your new cacti?

im talking fully composted back to the dirt from which they rose, but then again i dont know how good of an idea that really is. I have a lot of ornamental cacti that might be up for the challenge.

So last night i finally got to acess the dammage and much to my suprise they are completly salvagable. The extent of the rot was greatly exaggerated. I simply cut off the nasty stuff and peeled as normal. Letting the cactus soften up a bit makes peeling the skin much easier.
