My first growing attempt
    #7170209 - 07/13/07 08:54 AM (16 years, 7 months ago)

I started my first attempt yesterday, but from looking around it looks like I've already made some mistakes. I have two more syringes so I guess I could consider this a "test run." Here's what I've done so far:

1) Acquired supplies: 3/4 pint canning jars, vermiculite, brown rice flour (Bob's Red Mill, only ingredient listed is brown rice flour), p.c. spore syringes (four varieties).

Concerns: Jars too big? Brand of flour ok?

2) Poked four holes in the lid of each canning jar, perfect size for an 18 G needle.

3) Prepared substrate and put in canning jars (each jar contains approximately 1 cup vermiculite, 3/8 cup flour, 3/8 cup water). Jars were filled to 1/2 inch from top, top part was cleaned and sterilized with alcohol, then filled with vermiculite.

4) Covered jars with tin foil, sterilized in a big pot with about 3" of water for an hour.

5) Allowed jars to cool for about nine hours.

6) Lifted tin foil and inoculated jars with 2 cc per jar. Five jars each of Ecuadorian and Golden Teacher.

Major concern: sterility. I'm doing this in a damp basement, which is also my living space, and that of my two cats. I cleaned all surfaces with alcohol but the air quality isn't the greatest. Is there a way to kill airborne contaminants?

7) Incubation chamber. I have a 27 gallon hexagonal acquarium. I've filled it with a couple of inches of water with a submersible aquarium thermometer set to 81 degrees. The jars are placed directly in the water. The aquarium is covered with a sheet to block light. There is a hole about 1" diameter at the top, uncovered, to allow air exchange. The jars have been in the chamber for one day.

Should I put the jars in a tub or something, and put that on top of the water? I figured either way the inside of the chamber is going to be quite moist. Do I need a larger hole for air exchange? Finally, should the chamber be dark, or is some light ok?

Comments/questions appreciated.

1. bown rice flour = brown rice flour, just like unleaded gas= unleaded gas, who puts it on the shelves doesn't really matter. The size of the jar is fine, the bigger it is, the longer it will take to colonize, that's all.

2. I have 2 dogs, a moldy ceiling, and a cat. I am a bachelor, iclean sporadically. I had one contam, and i wasn't exactly 'sterile environment' clean. Some suggest spraying Oust air sanitizer, i used nothing at all.

Place another bn in the water. Placing the jars directly in the water. makes me think 'accident', and it could alter the water content in your jars unfavorably. It will also eliminate the concerns for moisture and ventilation in the i/c. You don;t really need vent holes, and light is not something you need untill you are ready to fruit.

if you go to youtube, and search Mushrooms, you will find rr's videos on the subject, and they will walk you thorugh step by step, and eliminate a lot of questions. Also, the search feature on this site will almost always answe all of your questions and concerns.

If this is your first time, my best advice to give you, the thing i learned the hardest, is PATIENCE is the best tool to obtain.
I spent many a panic moment thinking i had screwed up my little science expeiment.

Also, take a gander in the grow log section, see what people are doing, how, and their successes and failures. It helps.

I'm a bit confused you say in the things you have acquired that you got a P.C but then in 4) Covered jars with tin foil, sterilized in a big pot with about 3" of water for an hour. Why didn't you just use your pressure cooker. or is this a typo?

Sounds good.

With proper technique, you can innoc jars under less-than-ideal conditions. I do recommend a glove box if you run into contam issues, but maybe you'll be ok.

It's been my experience that an incubation chamber isn't really needed. I store jars at room temp, and they work just fine. Maybe a little slower than they might otherwise grow, but so what? Though I do grains, not cakes- so take that into consideration.

As stated above, patience is key in this hobby. I think it's best to have an additional hobby to distract you from looking at the jars. Mushrooms are shy, they do their best work when you aren't looking at them.
