Piper At The Gates of Dawn
    #3742300 - 02/06/05 07:47 PM (19 years, 1 month ago)

I just recently bought Pink Floyd's 1967 album "The Piper AT The

Gates of Dawn." Which was before they had David Gilmour in the group,

with Syd Barret in his place. And  wow...this album definetly took a

hell of a lot of Pyschedelics to make. Listening to this album gives

me, and many others I know the ultimate trip, and I highly recommend

it.Does anyone feel the same way as me?  :smirk:

I rank it as Floyd's worst album...  I don't I just can't get into it and never could.  I'm glad Syd "left", or we wouldn't have dark side of the moon or meddle or wish you were here.

I like it. The Gnome is rad. I don't really think of it as Pink Floyd, it's more like Syd Barret featuring Pink Floyd.

I think of it more as the real Pink Floyd, and the rest is just PF featuring Gilmour. It was music like Piper at the Gates of Dawn that made Pink floyd a hit, and without it there would be no Pink floyd.

Well Buddy...If u didnt know..Wish you were Here was Dedicated to Syd Barret. Syd is what made FLoyd big...without Syd we wouldn't have anything. Many of Pink Floyd's songs are dedicated to Syd...Such as Brain Damage from Darkside of the moon, and Shine on you Crazy Diamond. (Get it? SoYcD? SYD?) Just a few pointers bud...

best floyd album, no doubt in my mind..

my xgf and her friends used to say it was boring and depressing..they were boring and depressing..

such an incredible album, the beginning experimentations with stereo..and boy, did they do more with it than 99.9% of the artists throughout recording history. such incredible manipulation of sound, there never has been and never will be anything like it.

this is music that comes from the soul (whatever that may be)..

a lot of floyd fans are split over this subject, love or hate dichotomy. many if not most of the people on the hate end claim it's just too weird. I say to them 'get good headphones, good drugs, turn off the lights and be taken away, far far away'.

thanks for permitting my short rant

Oh man, I love this album. It is definately different, and "not like the floyd of today", but you could also say what floyd was after is "not like the floyd of yesterday". Sure I love dark side, I love the wall. They are great albums, but I also love Piper in a different way. And Syd. When you listen to syd's solo albums, it's insane how close his scream is to roger waters cries. If you listen to albums right after syd left, they write very poorly. It's almost sad. But they soon learned how to write and put in their own style and syds and merge them.

I was very into Syd's 'legacy' for a long while, and afterwards listening to later Floyd (later than Piper) it seemed to me that Gilmour would often seem to emulate Syd, and that he & other Floyd members seemed to even exploit Syd in their music.  I know this isn't really the case as they were just writing and playing as they had always but with the memory of Syd, after all, Gilmour and Wright did work with Syd on his solo albums.  But I find it interesting that he wrote most of his material within the span of a year..

edit: as per your sig, I've been listening to the Beatles a hell of a lot now that the weather is nice and life is good  you know how the musical phases go hah

i don't know man, i've given the album several good listens. it just seems too strange i just don't get it, but there are few songs i like (such as interstellar overdrive). i'll probably never get it and i definitely don't think it's their best album but it's an important part of floyd's history.

just look at it as a different flavor of floyd, the band being in a different place and different idea. i generally look at all floyd albums as if they were seperate ideas the band was trying to put together. piper at the gates is a fantastic album, perfect mushroom tripping album.

Hey, 2 years later, well done.

My opinion still holds as well does my argument.  I'm glad I can listen to and enjoy Wish You Were Here or Meddle or Animals, cuz if Syd stayed in the band, those albums wouldn't exist...and fuck THAT.  And never tell anyone they have no taste, they just have DIFFERENT taste.

Try again, buddy.
