Suggest Some Books (SSB)
    #7167126 - 07/12/07 05:25 PM (16 years, 6 months ago)

I'm getting very in to reading as of late.

I'll give you guys some good books I have read.

Steppenwolf
Siddhartha(In Progress)
The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Tests

Theres probably more but i Cant remember them.

I was looking in the library today and found more Herman Hesse books that caught my interest. Such as Journey to the East. I also want to pick up some books by Aldous Huxley. Some that caught my Eye were Island and Brave New World.

I'm also looking for some Hunter S Thompson books but i don't know what to get besides fear and loathing.

Please reccomend me some good books.

Brave New World is pretty good. The Silmarillion by JRR Tolkein is a wicked book. I'm reading 'Atlas Shrugged' by Ayn Rand at the moment.

right now im taking an english course about childrens literature and its rocking my socks.
ive read a bunch of classics so far, the best are:

a wizard of earthsea
and the jungle book

both of those books have extremely good storytelling and are multi-layered. they may be pegged as childrens books, but they are intended for an adult audience as well.

I'd also reccomend Alan Watts, especially books that are transcripts of his radio shows and speeches/lectures.

What is this silmarillion about? I've never heard of it. I tried reading some of tolkein's books but simply could not get in to them.

The Silmarillion is the account of the first and second age of middle earth, the lord of the rings and the hobbit deal with the third age.
The Silmarillion contains the story of creation and alot of underlying information and themes about the mythical world Tolkein created. It spans from before time began, the creation of gods and evil, the creation of the elves and dwarves, the elves first war upon the dark lord Morgoth, the origin of Sauron and the creation of Men until the finding of the ring in the third age.
Although it is shorter in length, it is a much more difficult read that the other two parts.
Something like that

Catch-22 is worth reading.

you MUST read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!

"Journey to the Center of the Earth" by Jules Verne is a classic, but very trippy!

Also, "House of Leaves" by Mark Z. Danielewski is awesome, very surreal and will keep you guessing. This is probably the coolest book i have read. Just go to a bookstore and flip through the pages and you know it will be wierd. Some of the pages have upside down text, or no text at all, or there will be like three pages of footnotes... all correlating to the increasing craziness of the main character. Definitely recommend it to anyone who likes their fiction to be slightly twisted

You are on the verge of reading a fantastic book. "Island", by Aldous Huxley, is the best book I have read in a long time. Steppenwolf is also a fantastic book.

Yes I'm nearly finished with steppenwolf.

When I looked at the book "Island" the other day, I was just completely blown away. It seems like one of those books I can learn a lot from.

I wish I had started reading much earlier in my life.

A Prayer for Owen Meaney
A confederancy of dunces
Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates
Trout Fishing in America
Geek Love
Stranger in a Strange Land
Wraeththuu
Guns, Germs and Steel

while none of those are truly Biographical, except Trout Fishing in America could be at times, that list covers every genre, and every single book on that list is extremely captivating.

The poetry of Dante, Arthur Rimbaud, Charles Baudelaire, Gerard de Nerval, Paul Verlaine, Victor Hugo..
the classics from the beat generation (Kerouac, Ginsberg, Burroughs)
Dostoievski is great, the works of Philip K. Dick, Asimov, Orwell, Huxley. The Cosmic Serpent by Jeremy Narby.

here's a list of suggested books by the band Tool

SUGGESTED READING MATERIAL

Behold the Protong! by Stanislav Szukaslsi

This artist/sculptor created and wrote more by age 30 than DaVinci did his
whole life. Any collection of works you can find by this man is well worth
the effort.

Love and Sleep and AEGYPT by John Crowley

John is a master of layering patterns and synchronicities. In these books he
explores the possibilities of there being many histories to the world.

And the Ass Saw the Angel<-!> by Nick Cave

This is a twisted beautiful story of a mute, persecuted boy's view of the
world outside a self-righteous religious community.

The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks

A macabre look at an adolescent's feeling that something is missing.

Squeak the Mouse by Massimo Mattioli Sexual, homicidal rodents. Nothing more
but certainly no less.

Nothing In This Book by Bob Frissell

Sacred geometry and the evolution of human consciousness. I think this is a
very important book in helping us understand our connection with the
universe through mathematics.

Earth by David Brin

A frightening look at one possible future for man.

Art and Physics by Leonard Shlain

Diary Of A Genius by Salvador Dali

It's always interesting to slip into an overly creative person's thoughts.

Interior Design with Feng Shui by Sarah Rossbach

Setting up your environment in order to take advantage of all available
energies.

Archaic Revival by Terrance McKenna

Enlightening perspectives on hallucinogens and culture.

Currently reading Journey to the End of the Night by Louis-Ferdinand Celine and I would recommend this to everyone. Here are a few other suggestions:

Science Fiction: A Scanner Darkly by Philip K. Dick

Surreal/Bizarre: Pseudo-City by D. Harlan Wilson

Short Fiction: Where I'm Calling From - Raymond Carver

Philosophy: The Trouble With Being Born - E.M. Cioran
