Ok finally.... check my setup before I inoculate.

Ok. I am NOW using quart jars with popcorn substrate. I have soaked and boiled and steamed and now they are cooling. I have 5 holes in the lids and I have 3M duropore tape over the holes on the outside of the lids. Lids are upside down and the are about half full of popcorn kernels. I am going to inoculate at around midnight if you approve.

seems fine to me. I'm guessing upside down lids for gas exchange? If you have 5 holes with micopore tape (assuming they aren't TINY) that could almost be enough for them to breathe so you wouldn't have to flip the lids.

All seems well though, so good luck.

p.s. I would only inoculate in one of the holes for two reasons.

1. the process of removing and sticking your needle in 5 times is an awful lot of room for contamination.
2. your going to shake the jars to disperse anyways. (the beauty of whole grains)

AFAIK, flipping the lids is just so that they are easier to remove later.

Right. The jars are designed for canning and creating a vacuum and in the intense heat gluing themselves on. Makes them tougher to screw off. That way the glue sticks to the rims and not the jars.

Aight... I knocked all my stuff up. 1-2 CCs per jar. Depending on size. I also inoculated the little rubbermaide shaker container I bought from ebay. This is it. Time to sit back and wait.
