a tip for wet grains....
    #7156823 - 07/10/07 03:15 PM (16 years, 8 months ago)

I always had trouble getting wheat/rye to the optimum moisture leve, it was always over or under. I have since found out that a handful of moist coir in each jar helps to balance the moisture, and helps to disperse mycelium when shaking.

This (these) are some jars I made using wheat and a handful of moist coir, inoculated with the Burma strain on 7/5/07.

not bad for just under 5 days. hooray.

You think peat moss would accomplish the same thing?

Ahh, if you were a day earlier, I would've gone out and got coir to mix with my WBS jars. :frown: Thanks for the tip dude, I would definately do that the next time.

a little update-

these are 2 Penis Envy Uncut jars that are just barely over 9 days old (was shaken at 7). The one on the left has coir added, and the one on the right does not. The left one has probably just one day untill full penetration, but I'll give it another week just to be sure. so roughly 15 days from start to finish. Not too bad.

I dont have problems with moisture content but I have found that throwing in a tbsp or so of Blood Meal adds a nice boost to colonization times - I'm speaking here of adding it with the Gypsum, to the soak water... my jars with this method took 10 days to fully colonize in one shake, without the additive they were more like 16 days. I did this for the nitrogen addition (instead of coffee) but there were still visible "spots" of the material on the grains, same as your coir addition... very interesting.
