Fruiting Prob.(slow mycelium growth)
    #7157379 - 07/10/07 05:58 PM (16 years, 8 months ago)

I using a MYG kit. The kit's in fruiting now for about a week. Before that it was placed in darkness for 7 days (the instructions said 5) but the mycelium wasn't grown through the casing layer. well barely. I'm a n00b so I wasn't sure what to do. I put it into fruiting under 12/12. Will the mycelium still grow through the casing layer? I'm I going to suffer a major drop in yield? Should the kit be put back in darkness? What to do?

UPDATE:well I haven't touched anything. Now about one third of the casing layer had a decent pinset and formed nice sized mushrooms. The other two thirds however have little to no pins forming (a mushroom here and there).

Now will the mycelium eventually grow through this area? If or when it does will it grow what can be considered a first flush? or not since it has already flushed on the other side of the tray? Any response would be 'mush' (ha, ha,I know - duh) appreciated asap as I would like to yeild the most out of this as I can. Thank ya.

I'm not , I repeat NOT simply writing this post in order to get bumped because I really want to get some kind of answer to this sooner rather than later. Not at all...

It sounds like part of your mycelium network just reached the surface before the rest, which I imagine would create an uneven surface layout. As you said its already begun forming fruits so it would probably be best to leave it in the FC. The main issue I see is your going to have fruits in different stages of maturity. Best thing to do is continue to maintain fruiting conditions.

thank for the reply..
I've opted not to put it back in incubation. I found an answer here:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/6959851

This involves removing the uncolonized sections of the casing.
Not sure if I should do it though. I'm leaning in that direction though.

Is there any visible mycelium growth on the half of the casing your contemplating removing a small amount of casing material?

@MadFairytale-
no, not at all. Mind you, one or two mushrooms have managed to emerge from that area.
This probably sounds like somewhat of a contradiction.

Well if you decide to remove a small amount, I would kind of "brush" it off. That would help in removing mainly the material that isn't being utilized at this point in time. GL.

That just lets you know its not too far under the surface. Removing a SMALL amount would help. Just don't "dig" into it. It would be best to remove it as gently as possible.

I'd leave it if there are mushrooms coming up. You may get the same amount over large amounts of time due to fewer pin formations...but many of mine have the same problem and come through like champs.

Thanks guys.
I've read over at that 'other' site alot of ppl don't even re-incubate after applying a casing layer. I found this kind of strange. If I would have did that this time I probably wouldn't have any shrooms (yet) coming up at all. Does anyone here have experience doing it this way?

@the Capt.-
so you're saying that I'll probably yield the same, it will just take longer? I wouldn't be looking at a normal 1-2-3 flush cycle?

Honestly, I wouldn't know, and haven't been in it long enough to tell. I'm just starting to work on perfecting pinsets, etc.

You'd yes, have the same pin-fruit-pin-fruit cycle that will take up to two weeks. I've just noticed that most of my tubs that fruit with insufficient pins develop bigger fruits during those first that poke up, and fruit for more flushes.

You have one or two mushroom that emerged from the network on the half of your casing with no visible surface mycelium development. The layer on that half of the casing are going to colonize given time, but if you want to remove a SMALL amount (its in caps just to remind that I mean small) it just saves it the "trip". If, however, you are using a really thin casing layer, then it wouldn't be worth the risk to remove it because you don't really want to disturb colonization underneath or allow it to dry out. And on the "1-2-3" cycle, I've always tend to thought of 1st flush, 2nd flush, etc. as those fruits in similiar stages of maturity that can be harvested at that point in time. Hope that helps. GL.

Some of us have very different ideas of what constitues a n00b.

For example, perhaps I really shouldn't call myself a n00b since I have done a couple of grows before, read over 5 to 7 books on growing mushrooms and mycology generally and spent probably 200 plus hours reading these and other forums. In my view , untill I'm an expert, I will remain a n00b. I believe this way of looking at things keeps one fresh and open to knowledge. Not this attitude of 'I KNOW THAT' , enabling you to be dumbed-down by your own self-rightousness.

I'm willing to bet you don't have half that under your belt; your ego couldn't deal with the idea you might be a 'n00b'. Not you , you're a pro. Come on buddy, admit it: PF tek is the only thing you know and you just barely managed to pull off a successful 10 gram harvest from that...(which, in another context would be fine)

PPL like this guy always have to 'be a jerk, or sound condescending' because that way they get their 2 cents in without actually contributing anything.
