You're not going to live in the dorms forever, right? Maybe the rest of the schoolyear?

So then I don't recommend doing that much more work with it. Fishtank + perlite would work great, with manual fanning for air exchange 1-2 a day. Quiet too.

First off, I think you've got a bit of overkill. I don't use a humidifier becuase at times they can make an area too humid. Perlite laying on the bottom of an aquarium can easily achieve a humidity of 90-100%.

If you can see beads of moisture on your glass, you have enough moisture.

Now remember, cakes need more humidity then casings. So you're setup may change if you move from one medium to another.
