It sounds alot like what we do with quart and half gallon jars, where the substrate is sterlize then the spores are added then the jar is shaken till all the seed is broken up and mixed. It does speed up things, qwuart jars take about 10 days to colonize.

I thought about doing that, but the environment i'm working in isn't sterile enough to keep a casing going, so i sure wouldnt' want to try having substrate open to the air. When i find a better place, i'll probably try it out. Nice to know it works, before hand, though. I am thinking about locking myself in a restroom for about two hours w/ the lysol can spraying and a hepa air filter going before I attempt the follow. take a colonized cake, cut it in slices, take sterile new substrate and mix in one of the slices then cover the top of the new jar w/ another slice to form a protective layer against contam... anyways hopefully you get the point. W/ me wearing a mask hat sterile gloves do you think my env. will be sterile enough to perform this risky procedure??

atlas, yeah, it will be sterile enough alright, but you won't be performing the procedure since you'll be dead from lysol fumes.ShroomGod

I've read before about that quart jar way mentioned above... where you shake the jars to mix up the substrate and speed up colonization.Couldn't you do the same thing with standard PF jars by just filling them 3/4 full instead of completely full and then shaking the mix around once a day? Or is brown rice/verm too sticky for that? GT

it's pretty sticky, it it could work. I tried it that way first, but I get better results by manually churning it. But hey whatever you can get the best results with then go for it
