Panaeolus ? I.D. Request
    #7146618 - 07/08/07 01:58 PM (17 years, 3 months ago)

I know these are worthless but I was curious what they are. I have tried to identify them using the forum search, site search function and google, but have had no success. So here goes:

I found several small white mushrooms in a couple horse fields directly on horse dung in central TX. I think they may be a Panaeolus of some sort. My camera can't focus on these tiny things so No Pics.

Habitat: Central Texas, grassy shaded Field with horses, maybe a cow or two. Growing directly from horse or cow dung. It was hard to tell because the poo was dry.

Cap: 2cm across 1.5 cm high, round shape like helmet, very light tan color and a little darker in center. smooth.

Stem: 8 cm long, 4mm across, very thin like straw, brittle/snaps easily. same color as cap, very light tan, almost white when wet.

Gills: silver gray, crowded, I don't think they are attached, pretty

Spore Print: Black, Jet black

No Bruising

That's pretty close. The cap on that one is larger than the ones I saw. These were quite small, also the stem was thinner. About the size of a candy sucker handle.

Panaeolus Antillarum!!! That's it! Looks identical in the pics.

Comment:In the late 1940s this species gained a reputation in Australia as the 'Hysteria Fungus' allegedly causing accidental hallucinogenic inebriation's in foragers in some parts of that country. Later it was determined that the actual causative mushroom was Copelandia cyanescens which is macroscopically similar. This species is edible but does not taste worth eating. -MushroomJohn

That's why I noticed it... I was looking for copes. Interesting. Does this mean that Copes could be growing in the same field?
