A couple of my friends tried practicing that type of "Buddhism". Maybe the people that taught them the chanting and philosophy were way off, but it seems like the whole thing reeks of personal gain and benefit, adding to the illusory solidity of a self-image, by having people chant with a desire in mind, an end-goal, that they want to achieve. It's like petitionary prayer...just praying for whatever one wants.
Supposedly it's based almost entirely on the Lotus Sutra, but I'm not too sure.
