Bruises blue, prints black, grows from grass?!?!?!?!?!
    #7137945 - 07/06/07 03:32 PM (16 years, 7 months ago)

As many of you are aware, it finally started raining in NW Florida. So now we've got mushrooms of all sorts sprouting up everydamnwhere. Not a bad problem to have, really. While I'm still working on a trip to my fave cow field (its a drive from where I live), I spotted a whole bunch of interesting mushrooms growing from grass. At first I thought to myself "ah, more mystery Agaricus;" but then I saw one which was laying a perfectly black sporeprint on another (which is a probable Agaricus):

This fella right here.

So I grabbed my knife and started cutting shrooms.

These bad boys have brownish-violet gills:

And they bruise blueish/violet/black:

And they print dark black (the lighter parts are where the moisture from the mushroom looks like it got on the paper):

Finally, here is a cross-section of the freshly-bisected mushroom:

IN conclusion:

Habitat: Grass, growing in semi-clusters (small groups but not clumped together).

Gills: Gills are dark brownish-purple to black. Attached.

Stem: Stringy, bruises violet-black where cut or handled.

Cap: White to sunburnt brown.

Spore print color: Purplish brown to black.

Bruising: Violet to black.

Location: NW Florida - grass fields (ex-pasture? I don't know)

Agaricus....Not Active..... Not blue bruising trust me!
The spoor print is actually a dark Brown not Black..
They will bruise from red to a dark brownish...

Well hell...

Y'see... i see purple and think "blue." Also, my Audubon guide sez that the Psilocybe cubensis prints "purplish brown," which is (kinda) what I see here... I also noted some similarities to the mushrooms that Pinhead found growing in mulch in Texas - but I am also very new at this and am not about to run a risk with my personal health.

Y'sure? I hate fuckin' Agaricus... they grow like weeds around here and they're enough like cubes to get me all excited. :igor:

The one in the first pic was definitely an Agaricus, I just included it to show the spores which had spilled on it from the other, more suspect (I thought) mushrooms.

They do look allot like a Cubensis (to the new hunters) but once you start finding Cubes you will easily be able to tell the differences..

Yeah... the way I think of it is that if you're listening to the little voice in your head that wants them to be cubes... they prolly aren't. I figure when I know, I'll just know. It was just weird seeing these guys growing all over the place today.

I will be going to a cow pasture tonite, hopefully will come back with some real cubes. Wish me luck!

heh.

I have updates in my mulch thread coming. Habitat pics and substrate pics, plus today's finds I didn't give away to a friend. Her boyfriend said he's seen cubes in piles of mulch/compost at job sites (construction), and he knows what they look like, too.

Keep looking, man. I doubt you'd ever find them in grass, unless someone buried poo or some other stuff they were colonizing already (like someone's outdoor project or something).
