spore syringe
    #713735 - 06/30/02 05:17 PM (22 years, 8 months ago)

I recently ordered 3 spore syringes... I want to inoculate some 1/2 gallon jars containing rye grain with them.. but

should I be making somthing out of the spore syringes first... I know that i could inoculate about 3 jars with the syringes then do grain transfers to make more jars.. then prints when the mushrooms are done to start again..

but what I was wondering is there a better method.. so i can always have spore syringes to inoculate jars on hand..

thanks in advance

Well, you could use agar, but if you didn't know that already you probably don't have the materials, environment, etc. to do that.

Actually, what you want to do is grow out your mycelium, make some mushrooms, then spore print the caps. You can then make syringes out of your prints.

You will only need 1-3cc of spore solution per jar so those 3 syringe, probably 30cc, should last for 30-10 jars depending on size. When they run out they run out and you'de better hope you have a print to make a syringe from. Also, you could try a liquid innoculant which is simply growing mycelium in liquid and using that to innoculate jars but that takes extra time and may cause contamination if you're not care. Go look up the karo tek at www.mycotopia.net

I dunno, it really depends on what he's doing. If he's planning on casing, then rye grain in a 1/2 gallon jar really isn't too bad of an idea (assuming use of filter discs and such). My cat would put in about 2-3cc of the syringe in each jar.

Of course, if he is inexperienced, my cat would go instead with quart jars, putting 1-1.5cc in each. 1/2 gallons will hold more, but it's kinda like putting all your eggs in one basket.
