(Updated photos at the bottom)Schizophyllum commune and cubensis living in harmony and...
    #7132048 - 07/05/07 11:03 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Some people get their jollies through pitting captive spiders and wasps against one another... a cruel but likely intriguing hobby I simply can't participate in and remain in good conscience.
I prefer to watch the glacial elegance of competing fungi, molds, and outer-space spore born mysteries.

Schizophyllum commune and P. cubensis on the same cake about two weeks after birthing. The world's most successful fungi is the projected winner.

Updated photos on an unknown fungal contaminant.

haahaa... I should state the above cakes are not representative of my typical growing endeavors, where a sustained absence of contamination is the rule over 95% of the time.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! I kinda like them actually.
The Schizophyllum cake has been quarantined within a reclaimed candy jar and just today started showing signs of slightly pink coloration.

The crustier one has been residing in my FC for several weeks now and hasn't proven to be particularly virulent... but yeah, it should have a home of its own soon... I would hate to see what happens when it begins sporulating.

Those bottom ones look a little like a cauliflower mushroom. Is the flesh brittle or rubbery?

More rubbery than brittle.

At some point when a little extra time presents itself I'll have a look through the microscope... Though it will doubtfully be of much help...

I'm already pretty darned sure it is a basidiomycete but would like to at least endeavor to confirm this assumption.
So far my best guess as to ID puts it in the Polyporaceae family... specifically I'm thinking along the lines of Antrodia.

Continuing to coexist.
Hopefully this humble cake can provide a valuable lesson to us all.
