Re: Mycelium will not "jump" onto birdseed!

You know...what I have done in the past is simmer the birdseed in water 'til most of the water has evaporated. Then scooped the grain in the 1-quart jars. But...I little trick that you guys may not be aware of...I take a 2nd jar and dump the cooked birdseed into it (real quick like). The birdseed that sticks to the bottom of the original jar gets placed back into the pot. See...because the grain was so wet it stuck to the jar! It worked for me almost 100% of the time! I only tried to do it the TEK way (130ml water + 250ml finch birdseed + pressure cooker) in hopes of saving some labor time.

I am shopping ebay now in order to purchase an OHAUS Digital Scale. I should be able to measure perfect amounts of grain and water for my next attempt.

Thanks for the info!

Amen. One thing I've noticed since I've switched to birdseed (this seems to apply to my experiences with rye also), is that you have to play with the moisture levels a bit to get it just right. When you think about it, a typical BRF/Verm mix is not terribly moist... just damp. Not every recipe will work under every set of conditions. One mistake I seem to make is using too much water in the pressure cooker, which seems to overmoisturize the substrate more so. Also, the specific type or condition of your birdseed when you buy it varies and so forth. Don't feel like you have to follow a tek to the letter. Sometimes that can be just as bad as neglectfully screwing something up.

I have had a problem with steeping the birdseed, I can't seem to keep the water temp low enough to just steep, nomatter how low I turn the burner, it's always comes to a rolling boil, does anyone else have that problem, and if so, what do you do about it?
thanks,
Oleander
