Has cost taxpayers 450 billion dollars in it's 45 year history. Bush addittionally lobbied for another 50 billion in 2000, for the Ballistic Missle Defense. I can't help but feel that world starvation could have been defeated with all this money.

BMD serves two purposes: one, to maintain an illusion of security that allows the masses to continue to function; and two, to reward politicians and defense contractors for their hard work and ingenuity.

I say "illusion" of security because the BMD has been argued against as futile since the onset. Now, I suppose an illusion of security is necessary to keep things stable (consider our ridiculous airport gauntlets), but for tens of billions of dollars? I could make cardboard rockets that would be about as effective, and then I could divert that money to something useful.

I agree except with your first assertion,, I believe it keeps the masses feeling insecure,, and thus creating a defensive or ego syndrome, in caring too much for their own life.

We need defence lest we should be more vulnerable to attack. Besides our retaliatory power we need to be able protect ourselves from those who don't care about retaliatory strikes.

The money could not eliminate poverty, there will always be poor in society.

we're not talking about poverty, wer're talking about starvation,, the most personal thing about any person,, a thing that wars are fought over, the most insecure most of us care aboutr,, so why do we not help others with this money,, why should we protect ourselves against those who would war us for our farmland just to eat? Rather we invest this money in goodwill, than personal security. Lest, lessons from the bible be taken in vain.

Good point. There is a big difference between poverty and starvation. An ideal world would see neither, but a realistic world, as Rail Gun is suggesting, might have the former, but we would be doing everyone a favor by keeping that poverty level well above starvation.

And yeah, I guess there is a push to keep the sense of threat alive as well as the sense of security. If it weren't for the former, we wouldn't need the latter. It's a delicate balance we're playing with.
