So my big screen TV went out and I decided to take it apart and found what was wrong *w/PICS

I have some electronic repair knowledge thanks to the Navy and I decided I would see if it was anything obvious before I threw it away. It's so old (2001) that it would cost more to repair than it was worth I figured. The problem is that I waited until 3 months after I already blew $4500 bucks on a new one.

As soon as I crack it open, I see this.

Busted capacitor. When will they finally do away with these and go solid? It should be an easy fix if I can figure out how to pull out the tray that all of the circuit boards are on. I pulled all the screws but something is still keeping it in there and I can't figure it out, any ideas?

I figured that was all there was to it, or at least hoped, and then I saw this. The solder points are rusting and it looks like it may have spread around the printed pathways on the board. Do any of you thinks it's bad enough to cause problems? Is there anything I can do about it?

The capacitors are so cheap and easy to change (thanks to have a huge cirucit board, a lot easier when they have a huge amount of space to house all of the components) that it's worth a try. I just don't know if I should attempt anything with the rust or if there is something I could do to slow it down or halt it.

Use alcohol to clean the rust most of it will come out.

The "rust" looks like flux to me... wouldn't worry about it.

Solder doesn't "rust".

Referring to the first image, if you mean the white stuff between the capacitors that is not stuff from the capacitors that is adhesive the manufacturer puts on those components to keep from vibrating loose & causing loose solder joints.

Referring to the second image, that is flux

What kind of TV is it & what are the symptoms of it

Why is it only on those two capacitors?

It's a Mitsubishi wide screen rear projection. It first just started with the red gun going out of alignment until the TV warmed up, usually 30-45 minutes or so. After a while, it just wouldn't even turn on anymore.

I don't know the specific reason why it is only on those two capacitors. It could be they had problems with those two capacitors with heat, shipping, vibration from oscillation from the power supply, etc. I have seen this in other electronic devices such as car amps, stereo receivers, TV's, car stereos, VCR's. The most common problem I have seen with those Mitsubishi models with the red becoming out of alignment is the STK packs on the convergence assembly going bad or the solder joints on the STK packs and/or regulators becoming broken due to the heat generated.

Usually when electrolytic capacitors blow, the tops swell upwards and split open oozing out a paste.

Thanks. I guess I just thought I knew what I was talking about. I saw fluid that appeared to flow from the top of a capacitor and assumed, "So that's what a blown capacitor looks like."

Are the STK packs the electronic parts that come off of the 3 guns?

So I did some reading and you were spot on. Finally got the board out and as soon as I flip it over, I find the joints are nearly all cracked.

It was hard to capture with the camera, but here is one shot you can see it a little bit.

Unfortunately, I don't think my soldering skills are up to something that small and close together, so I think I'm going to see how much a TV repair shop will charge to replace those.

One thing I was worried about though, a few of things I read said that if you let the problem with the convergence get to the point where it wouldn't even turn on, you may have even more problems. Any ideas what these problems would be?

What I have found is if the STK packs get to a point where it keeps the set from coming on it could be just be the protection circuitry detecting a problem with the STK packs & not allowing the the set to come on. This is what the protection circuitry is supposed to do. By replacing the STK packs it may resolve the problem. Most projection TV's have at least "over voltage & over current" protection. If the set has a no power symptom (dead)in other words no power indicator then the primary power supply fuse may be blown. If you here a click when you first plug in the set to AC before you try to power on the set, then the standby power supply is energizing & the primary power fuse is probably good. When you try to power on the set & you here a series of clicks like it is trying to power on but doesn't then it likely detects a problem somewhere in the set & is in protection. If after replacing the STK packs the set will still not come on then there could be open resistors on the convergence assembly or bad regulators on the convergence assembly, if these are good then there probably could be a problem in the power supply/deflection. assembly

Sorry if I caused any confusion, what I meant was that some manufacturers may have problems with certain capacitors (not being blown) but where they are mounted on the PC board, they may vibrate loose during shipping or normal operation so they apply the white adhesive to keep the capacitor leads from breaking off flush with the board & to keep them from creating broken solder joints.

Soooo.... I've got a Denon AVR-3300 that won't turn on after the house got hit by lightening...

Time to bust out the multimeter.  Bad thing about that is though, I'd bet you'll have multiple component failures.  Maybe you'll get lucky and they'll all be close to your power input.

Oh, but you did have them hooked up to a surge protector right?  Then you can use the warranty from it.  The one I have my home theater hooked up to gives me $50,000 protection insurance against that.

Fine print... only valid in the US. I had it on an APC SurgeArrest followed by an APC UPS (don't remember the model, one of the smaller ones). It was a clear day with a tiny bit of lightening ten+ miles to the north over the ocean. Out of nowhere a bolt hit the house, literally. Lost a TV, receiver, and microwave. Oddly, none of the other components hooked up (dvd player, tivo, UPS, etc) had any problem.
