WBS Monotub need help getting started

Monotubs look cool, and they look cheap, I LOVE CHEAP, however i'm not uber-thrilled about spawning to poo and leaving that sit around my house for a month. *Well i don't mind so much, but i don't want to have a conversation in which my girlfriend says "that's enough, its me or the poo!"* So is there anything else i could spawn to or can i just used alot of wbs with a casing layer to work? *I'm really into wbs right now as well, i can go back to BRF if i absolutely have to, but i'd prefer not, as i have a bunch of wbs i need to use up*

Absolutely you can. The effort it takes, however, adds a week and I would expect results to be on par with an equal amount of BRF.

Hpoo will not cause horrible odors, really. I have only a middling musky, stuffy scent to a room with many spawned tubs all incubating.

Coir is a good substitute for poo. You can usually pick up 3 bricks for less than $10 at pet stores.

Anyone have a formula for figuring out amounts needed, how deep do i have to go with the WBS? How thick a casing layer?

I've never worked with Coir Before, but i was thinking about it, seems to be popping up in alot of my searches...

I'd first recommend that forging a happy relationship with a farm is a big part of this hobby IMO :smile: It's much easier than you think. You'd like to spread a full-coverage layer of WBS for every 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of substrate, regardless of its type. I'd also say add 20% or so coffee grindings. Most people have had better luck doing so.

So this Coir (coconut fiber?) what does the general populace purchase it as/for? Do I use it in conjunction with Vermiculite as a casing layer or in some other method?


I love it anytime i attempt something new in this hobby i feel like a complete NOOB. What a humbling experience cultivation is...

OK so from what i have gathered so far i would.

Use my WBS to Spawn to Coir inside my monotub, then case w/ 50/50 peat/verm, Set and Forget

There is also the options of Used Coffee Grounds and Gypsum, but i haven't a clue as to what part of the procedure to ad these particular items. (been messing around with Gypsum a little lately but not as much as i should)

Yep, you have the general idea.

Read the bulk substrate teks for a more rounded view of things. Gypsum/Lime is used for casing contaminant control. You really don't need to use it for your first grow; just watch contams set in late in the game, and realize its importance by yourself. You can add coffee grounds into the coir just before you pasteurize.

Don't make the same mistake I did in my first coir grow; use an ample amount of spawn.

I'm excited about going the Coir Route, its always fun to try new stuff. What ratio of WBS to Coir do you suggest?

Same as any substrate, about 1:4, more is always nice if you have a surplus of spawn.

It's not about effectiveness (indeed I'm still fruiting a fucked-up tub of cpoo/straw that was colonized with less than a 1:10. took 3-4 weeks to colonize)...as much as preventing contamination. Faster your substrate takes hold producing mycelium and mushrooms, the less time it has to harbor unwanted third parties!

I am chalk full of spawn, just trying to figure out what i want to do with it, figured i'd give something new a go.
