Trich in between flushes, too often
    #7112198 - 06/30/07 06:18 PM (16 years, 7 months ago)

Sometimes I can get 3 flushes off, but usually after the first or second flush, i'm getting hit w/ trich. I have no idea what i'm doing to cause this, or what to do to protect cakes/casings in between flushes..

Going to do some research now but if anyone has got any good advice or any good links, it would be greatly appreciated.

Are you properly balancing the pH of your casing layer (and what are you using)? The substrate should remain fully colonized and ward off infection until it's pretty well spent, but the casing, non-nutritive for mushrooms, is fairly vulnerable.

Oddly Enough its hitting the cakes and the casings, I'm somewhat suspect if I should refrain from sterilizing my casing mix (i was just reading something about that from RR) Perhaps doing nothing or just pasturising would be the way to go, however, this may be completely unrelated. After all it is hitting cakes as well, always in between flushes... Argh I'm confused, however I have had the perlite in my fc longer than i should, so i'm doing a thorough cleaning of the FC, and putting new perlite in it.

Well yeah, if you're sterilizing your casings...pasteurize. Pasteurization is still well above the 130F that trich might survive. You also should check your pH.

Ask around, I haven't the experience enough with cakes. However, I would suspect trich at the 2nd-3rd flush to simply indicate a lack of FAE in your terrarium, or else an unpleasantly high green mold spore count in your home.

Hmmm never thought about FAE, i do tend to slack on that quite a bit, been debating on moving to a monotub in order to just dodge that part completley. What PH range should i be looking for? I'd imagine 7.1 ish.
