ready to go kits- QUESTION- help please
    #711225 - 06/29/02 04:06 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

recently I ordered a kit from an online vendor. It is rye berries with the casing technique. It came with manure, a tub, and the rye berries.

According to all the teks on casing that I have read, you are supposed to spread the colinized berries on top of the bottom layer and then spread more compost on top. They are stating to mix the colinized substrate all througout the manure compost.

I would appreciate all of your expertise on what I should do. follow the instructions from them and mix it completely in the compost, and let the fruit grow on that? or do the layers with casing. Should I use the manure as the casing or 50/50?

Is that a Homestead EZ-Gro kit?

Well,I have a lot of experience with this kit, so let me share it with you.
First of all, it's not a good idea to use the neglect tek as they suggest on an uncased bulk substrate. So you'll need to case it, which you should do regardless of the intentions of HS to make this kit idiot proof.

However, you're not at the point where you need to worry about that yet. If your grain is fully colonized, then follow the instructions and put the rubber plug in from the outside, then wipe the tub down with alchohol and the two bags and your hands and a knife. Put the compost bag into the tub, slice it open and dump it out. Then do the same with the berries and thouroughly mix the berries with the compost. Make sure your compost is evenly layered on the bottom of the tub (not piled higher in the middle like I did!) when you're through. Don't pack it down, just spread it evenly. Lightly mist the surface and the walls with distilled or spring water, put the cover on, place it in an 86 degree humid environment and come back to this thread in 4 days with the progress.

Okay? Then we'll talk about casing it with coir. (Bed-A-Beast available at PetSmart) go get a brick.

This kit WORKS. I picked my first flush TODAY!

151 grams (fresh). Won't be tryin' 'em 'til the 4th, so ask me about the quality on the 5th.

The last time I got this kit I had tons of abhorts. What is the main cause for abhorts anyone? I would like to make this one not have so many. I have my humidity fine.

I had my entire second flush and 2/3 of my first abort on me. The 151 grams I did get was only 1/3 of the flush. This seems to be the nature of uncased compost. If you're smart, you'll case it in coco coir (Bed-A-Beast at PetSmart) after the compost is colonized. That's what I'm doing withe all bulk substrates I do in this fashion from now on. As a matter of fact, after I picked my first flush last night, I lightly scraped the surface and cased it. My second (third) flush should come in about 10-14 days and should blow the first away.

Let's hope so. I sure hope casing solves that problem.

Yes and so far every shroom has aborted at 3" or smaller!

I think the envirnment just isn't optimal - Too much humidity, not enough air exchange - Even though I fan it once in a while too. But the good thing is that I stretched the kit into two kits by taking 6 quarter sized pieces of mycelium and innoculating another tub of compost which I cased in coir at 90% colonization and it's pinning it's first flush now!

I had the compost (which is crappy stuff too, by the way), from a 6 year old Homestead classic kit that failed at petri stage. It took 3 WEEKS to colonize 90%!! (but that's not only 'cause it's crappy stuff, but also 'cause it was spawned with only a small amount of mycelium)

Anyway, I'll let you know what I get outa that and whether the second flush is all aborts again.

Plus, I have 24 pf tek jars knocked up and colonizing quick with EQ, KS, GT, T3, B+ and Creepers. I also have horse poo to pasturize with hay and 18 pounds of Dung Brothers compost AND another EZ-Gro kit with Cambo's I just spawned into the tub last night....

In about six weeks I'm gonna teach the world to trip, or die tryin'!
