Is there really a difference?

I was wondering if there is any kind of advantage to using the grain cakes as opposed to the BRF/Verm. cakes? With the grain you have to use a PC where with the BRF you only need a pot and a lid. If there is no advantage to using the grain then why do people waste money on a PC. I mean if you already have a PC then I can see the sense in trying different methods but otherwise it seems like a waste to me. Thanks. Chemkid

One of the advantages of grain jars is grain to grain transfers. Meaning, when a jar of grain is fully colonised you can use it to innoculate more jars. This is the way most professional growers do it. BRF verm jars are used more for small scale home cultivation, and ease of use.
Good luck

Not only grain to grain transfers, but grains can fully colonize in as little as 7-8 days instead of 2 weeks or more for BRF/V jars.

excellent....that is exactly the answers i was looking for....short and sweet. I think now I will nuy a PC and start the grain cakes. Do you think that grain is the best or maybe something else that colonizes even faster or is easier to do transfer innocculations?/

Grains such as rye berries or millet (birdseed) are VERY difficult to get right.
I've tried several times and failed, always too wet. It's not so easy.
I suggest you start with pre-sterilized grain bags and see if you can get fruit in the end before trying the hardest part first.

difficult? yes birdseed is a pain. i aint screwing w/ that at all. but the 9er tek ,reg brown rice, is the best thing that happened to me. no extra ingredients. just cook some rice, put it in a jar and whala. it grows VERY fast, like above statements mention, and easy as hell. once you see germination. the jar will colonise so quickly. you'll like it. +you can eat the cake w/ out worrying about eating carcinogens or anything. nice and healthy for you and your mycellium. brf sucks after you mess w/ that stuff!!!! and i'm still a biginner!

well thats all true but, I my experience, I use rye and also a aqua coir jiffy mix, in myco bags, and also a pod,, when you use a pod the cakes are nice you can leave them alone and sheck on them very seldomly, the only thiing you may need to do with them is duk them if they are too dry, but it seems to take a little longer, aqua in a myco then into a bin with verm is fast and easy , but you gotta mist and fan several times a day , the same with rye, , so cakes take longer but are less a hassle if you have the setup for it, and the others are faster but need more time and the yeilds are higher,, i still do both,,
