What causes mycelium to grow on stems?

First off, I am sorry for bringing up an old topic but I did searches and still could not find a Solid answer on what causes Mycelium to grow on the stems of developing mushrooms. I have read that it is caused by the humidity being too high, I also read that it is caused by the humidity being too low. I am just trying to figure out why this is happening and try to solve it so that mycelium will not end up covering my mushrooms. Can anyone shed some light on this topic? I am curious to find out what causes this.

It's harmless and is from more so on the side of the humidity being too high.
