I'm excited to check out Ulver when I get off work. Sounds like something I would dig. Been on a heavy ambient / soundscape kick.
yeah man, I got a serious psychic beatdown last night. Sometimes I really wonder why I do this to myself haha. Fuckin head was spinning off my shoulders. I feel pretty wonderful today, though.

Ulver prob made one of the more known albums in the atmospheric subgenre. I just never heard it, I think it's that one.

yes that is the one i shared @roboshaman, bergtatt. it is more or less the start of "atmospheric" black metal outside of burzum himself, though to me all black metal is atmospheric to some extent. i think you'd appreciate it @psicomvb (sp?) @
ulver also made one of the most raw black metal albums of all time. the story goes that they blew their sizable century media advance on cocaine and new suits, lived it up for a week and then went to a cabin in the woods and recorded the whole album on a cheap cassette deck in a couple of days  probably totally false, but the album fuckin sounds like that's what happened so i like to retell it.

The mountain one is kind of spooky, the guy is singing. Reminds me of MBV, somehow... the soft vocals.

i don't hear it but my friend who's a big mbv fan (as am i, but they're the only thing this dude cares about) said the same thing. to me it's just raw norwegian black metal with a bigger folk influence than most of their contemporaries, and the dude was 17 years old and hadn't learned how to project his voice much yet .
i just listened to my original press of you made me realize a few hours ago.

all of their albums are great, but the twin albums "bath" and "leaving your body map" are really incredible. definitely unlike anything else i've ever heard.
you would probably also like the band leader toby driver's newer band kayo dot. somewhat similar but a lot more out there. they are also fucking great, though i'd say a little less consistent than maudlin was.
i was really into both of his bands in high school, once every couple years or so i rediscover them and am blown away all over again.

They almost remind me of older Mastodon but with indie elements. Beautifully psychedelic and smooth. Can here some Floyd influences in there too.
