My dad has tons of great vinyl tracks just sitting out in the garage collecting dust. everytime i pass such a gold mine i fell like a douchebag just letting it sit there. what would the best way of getting the vinyl tracks onto my hardrive and then onto my i-pod or onto a cd for my dad? is there a way i can use a computer program to clean up the tracks so it doesnt sound all scratchy and what not like a vinyl normally sounds? any help would be great. thanks.

Personally, i think the scratchy sound is what makes vinyl, just clean them first. Now me, I have a mixer and turntables, so it is simple for me to run the output to my computer and record with a program like Bias Peak (I use a mac). For windows you could use something like Sonar. If you dont have a mixer, maybe your amplifier has RCA outputs, use an RCA to 1/8 inch and run it into your mic input. Hope that helps a little

If the vinyls were well taken care of (sounds like they weren't if they're just sittin' in a garage) then they shouldn't sound too bad anyway. Just get a record player, not everything needs to be played through your computer, ya know.

you can either purchase one of the mp3 turntables they have out now.. I believe Numark and a couple other companies are making them... they run directly to USB, I believe..
or, buy a cheap interface that allows you to run an RCA out of your receiver or amp or mixer, through a little box and come out USB.. then, you'll need a program like SoundForge for PC or GarageBand for Mac to record into. I got one of these intefaces for like $40 and the quality of recording is fine for normal home use.

considering the whole point is to get the vinyls onto the computer and to be able to clean them up and put them onto an I-POD or cd to take anywhere...it does need to be played through a computer........dumbass

ZOMG PLEAZE DON'T FLAME ME IT'LL MAKE ME CRY.
Learn how to not take everything like a dildo in your asshole. Like I said, if they were well taken care of they won't sound like shit. It's nice to throw some records on a record player every now and then. You also posed two different questions, one of which was if you could simply transfer them to a computer/Ipod for listening. So I guess I ain't the dumbass after all, am I?
I don't feel like getting banned.
