Humidifier goes PFFFZZZZZZZT... poof.

Okay, so I bought my Walgreens cool mist in February and recently adapted it to use a large rubbermaid container as a reservoir by cutting the top out. After a day or so, it burned out, causing my few (admittedly experimental and formerly bacterial) cakes to get both cobweb and trichaderma. Bad news, especially for an impoverished ragamuffin.
Has anyone who expanded their humidifier reservoir had this experience? I'm trying to figure out whether this was due to excess moisture dripping onto the unit (which I would expect a humidifer could handle, though I can't really say) or whether it had something to do with the actual reservoir expansion.
Thanks!
EDIT: For clarification, the unit is IN the greenhouse. I know it's not ideal, but it has been more or less necessary for stealth purposes. I could move its eventual replacement to the top shelf, I guess, preventing further drippage... I don't know, does anyone think moisture dripping onto the intake of the humidifier would cause a burn-out?

My advice sucks!
Sorry, I based my idea on what I thought was logical and not on experience.

Inside the greenhouse is the BEST place for your humidifier.
If you take it outside and pipe it into the greenhouse, your humidifiers are going to crap out even sooner.

I'm not sure why that would be better in terms of longevity--and really, a cool mist (with impeller) will be more effective, shroom-wise, being outside your greenhouse, because it won't just be recirculating the CO2-laden air. But then, I mostly do small grows in a big greenhouse, so that's not a big issue for me.
I haven't really cleaned mine out at all despite the fact that it would occasionally get covered with spores, but then, it's only been a few months since it was purchased. All I know is that it burned out and then maintained a rather high heat until it was discovered. That probably aided the mold growth, come to think of it.
I guess I'll give it another go, and buy a straight-up replacement from Walgreens with my eh, grocery cash, if only because it will fit the hole I cut into the reservoir. It's almost a blessing that the cakes went bad, since it will give me a reason to scrub my greenhouse top-to-bottom, which will be doubly beneficial since it's now had two trich attacks in the past few months, both of which got to the point of full dark-green sporulation.

but it does cause the motor bushings to get wet, which ruins them.
Okay, RR's setup is basically what I was doing, though. I wonder if condensation dripped down into the motor of the humidifier, causing the sort of damage described above. Maybe some kind of drip shield would be in order.
Alternatively, I guess I could set it up on the top shelf, since the ceiling of the greenhouse is slanted. That would make it harder to fill the 7gal+ reservoir, though.

CO2 isn't a problem in a greenhouse if you cut lots of small holes or windows. You can also leave the door cracked open. Put the humidifier on the floor or a lower shelf so it can shoot up and dissipate, rather than hit the ceiling of the unit.
They don't crap out because of humidity. They crap out due to backpressure in the hose, which forces moisture into the motor bearings, ruining them which then burns up the motor due to the extra load. That's why they're best used inside a greenhouse. They will also raise the humidity more because they're recycling already humid air, rather than dry air from outside. RR
