pH Buffering and adjusting.
    #7094146 - 06/26/07 09:51 AM (16 years, 9 months ago)

So I have been adjusting and buffering my casings and substrates per
the

1 Tbs of Gypsum per1.5 cup
1 Tsp of Hydrated Horticultural Lime per 1.5 cup

When I test using the stripe that I have I am way above 7.5 more close to 9 or
10.

I adjusted the lime down so far as 1/2 tsp per 3 cups and I am still getting
higher than normal readings...

Any ideas? Could it be my strips?

you're just using too much lime. hydrated lime is a very strong ph buffer. i suggest mixing up your casing mixture first without any lime at all, then add about 1 tsp total & test again. if it's not at 8 yet, add a little more until you get to 8. theres really no recipe for how much lime to use, you just have to figure out how much it takes to get YOUR casing mix up to ph 8.

Hmm, yeah from what I read from Monstermitch's posts and RR's you want to use a tsp of hydrated per1 or 1.5 cup...So thats where I am confused..

RR?

hoffmans is fine. its the kind RR uses if i remember correctly. you're simply using too much. different kinds of peat have different acidity to them, so you really can't just blindly trust a recipe. just keep testing with your strips until you reach 8 and you're golden.

Thanks fish, just out of curiosity what would be the
major issue if I went high on the neutral side? Like 10?
