Polyfill vs. Cotton balls
    #7090833 - 06/25/07 01:11 PM (16 years, 8 months ago)

Is there a substantial difference in filtering? can I just use cotton balls instead?

Polyfill is polyester fibers (will not decay).

Cotton is natural fibers (which will decay, rot, mold, etc.)

Cotton balls have no purpose in this hobby except for using them to swab the needle with alcohol.

BTW you can get polyfill @ like Michael's or anywhere that deals in fabrics for sewing, like Hancock.

if you are desperate for pollyfill slice up an old stuffed animal or pillow, usually its pollyfill instead of cotton. easy to tell the difference anyways.

For many years, cotton was the gold standard for filtering material. Polyfill is better because it's synthetic and PC'able, but cotton works fine. The catch is: Keep it dry!

Cotton absorbs moisture easily from the get go! It's also prime reality for bacterial growth! It may have been used in the past but thats why we call it the past we know better now. The only place for cotton now days is as a substrate when mixed with 4-5% rice or wheatbran and about 2-6% limestone (or calcium carbonate). for some edible mushrooms such as the straw mushrooms as well as oyster mushrooms. I would never recommend it personally for filtering.
