New FC Better results
    #7088946 - 06/24/07 09:55 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

So I decided that my current FC wasn't holding conditions good enough, because I've had 2 cakes in for about 2 weeks with no signs of pins at all. Here is a pic of the old FC.

Well, I found an old aqaurium, lined the top with foam weather insulation for house doors, added about 3 inches of perlite, a pint jar with a bubble stone, and here is the new FC:

After only one day in the new FC, one of the two cakes that had been in the old FC showed nice signs of progress:

Are those pins? Check out the very center of this next pic. Is this a pin?

Im proud of the new FC as it seems to be working so much better. Any comments, suggestions, or anything like that appreciated. Thanks.

you need a new light source, sir. just because a light is blue does not make it a blue spectrum light. get a full spectrum fluorescent and i think you'll have even better results.

well, unless you use the room light as your light source

All those holes in your old FC are the culprit for its lack fo success.

The new FC looks great! Good job on the air stone too! Make sure you still fan it 2-4 times a day to get that good ole Frequent Air Exchange, especially during the pinning phase.

If you are going to continue to use an air bubbler in a terrarium, you can try using hydroton instead of perlite, it works a bit better IMO.

You can find hydroton (little maroon clay pellets) at your local Hydroponics store. A decent airpump, 2 airstones on the bottom, 2 inches of hydroton and 1 inch of 10% hydrogen peroxide 90% water works great in a terrarium like the one you have setup.

Also, any light will work. Just the light in the room will work. Just make sure its on for at least 10 minutes a day and your good, I typically light mine for a few hours a day just b/c I can.

Everything is lookin great! Good job and good luck!

Incorrect. Air exchange is the number one pinning trigger. I've made clear from the start that when you drill a lot of holes in an FC, that you should use three to five inches of well drained perlite. He had 1 1/2 to 2 inches, thus humidity was too low.

Secondly, UVB is the wrong light source. Mushrooms are not reptiles. Room lighting is even worse if it's incandescent. Incandescent light bulbs have a color temperature of 3,000 Kelvin, and mushrooms pin best with a higher color temperature in the 5,000 to 7,000 Kelvin range. I suggest 'natural daylight fluorescent' with a color temperature of 6,500 Kelvin.

Major pinning triggers are, in order of importance: Full colonization, Fresh air with the corresponding decrease in CO2 levels, 98% to 100% humidity, evaporaton of moisture from the substrate, and last but not least, bright high frequency light. Put all of those factors together and watch them explode. Good luck.
