how does tub FC work?
    #7082701 - 06/23/07 07:28 AM (13 years, 8 months ago)

Can someone explain to me how this tub FC tek Double Tub Pictorial can work with no fanning or spraying?

And is it ok to put trays in instead of filling the tub directly with substrate?

Thanks

If the humidity is high enough, you wont need to spray it. The drilled holes with polyfill act as fresh air. I would still fan a few times a day though. Trays are good. I rarely fill the tote.

humidity should be 90%+ ?

Do you lay the bottom of the tub with soaked perlite?

I'm wondering how it gets enough humidity just from moist substrate.

drained perlite. Should be 95 before pinning then 85-90 once pinning starts.

3 to 4 inches of perlite will do the trick

"drained perlite"? Does that mean regularly drain off the old water and replace with new?

Nice think about the 2 tub tek is it doesn't need perlite. But I wonder if it really works!!

I'm no fan at all of the closed up tub teks. Also, you want near 100% humidity from the primordia forming stage all the way through harvest. High humidity and massive amounts of air exchange are the key to success with mushroom growing. You don't get that in a tub with polyfill or tyvek over the holes. There is no need or reason to filter air in a fruiting chamber. Air exchange is the way to prevent contaminants because they thrive in stale, still air, while mushroom mycelium thrives in moving fresh air.

Lots of air exchange means you'll need to mist to make up for the lost moisture. That's the nature of the beast.

You don't really need a drip tray. Just try not to spray directly onto the fruit as much as possible.

This is one flush I got from that tek.

It worked well for me. No perlite either. End result 15oz in 3 flushes in 3 weeks after pinning.

my friend's humidity still won't rise above 72% even with lots of perlite. it seemed the humidity was fine with 2 cm of perlite last grow. now with 6 cm the humidity has fallen from 95% to 70%. does the FC size have a relation with the amount of perlite in it?

The amount of perlite you use does relate to the size of your FC. 6 cm is not enough. He needs about 2-4 inches depending on the size of his FC. Do you know how big it is? Also has he drilled any holes in your FC for FAE?

If you make your substrate correctly, there will be PLENTY of humidity. In that setup there was so many droplets you could not see through the bins. The picture is when I took it apart. I also never opened it until that pic, after casing. Again, don't need perlite. And you don't probably need as high a humidity with casings as with cakes either. If you see that white in the picture, that is the colonized casing layer, not perlite. Sorry that pic sucks.

Here's a small DT that I'm doing right now. It's my first attempt, so it's a little one, about the size of a shoe box. The only draqback that I can see with using one this small is that my bottom FAE holes are almost touching my substrate after casing. I had to do it that way to make the substrate deep enough though. If this works I'm graduating to a bigger one for my next grow.
Not to hijack your threat, but do you think RR style holes in the top tub(lid) would work in place of big holes with Polyfil?
