Help me identify these mushrooms I found in my backyard!
    #7079449 - 06/22/07 11:44 AM (16 years, 10 months ago)

I found these little mushrooms scattered around my backyard in a 20ft radius. From the top they resemble Cubensis because they have a very faint orange tip. It would make sense that these are Cubensis because I buried a half colonized cake in the same area. (this is how I even knew to look for shrooms in my backyard) But they do not resemble Cubensis in any other way so I really need help identifying them.

Habitat: Lawn - Found growing directly out of the ground in grass.

Gills: The gill color is brown.

Stem: Yellow-white. Very skinny and fragile.

Cap: Tan tips and off-white.

Spore print color: No sporeprints.

Bruising: No color change was observed.

Location: Picked in Illinois

These mushrooms are Bolbitius vitellinus.

http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Bolbitius_vitellinus.html

They are not poisonous or psychoactive, but I don't advise eating them because they have rusty brown spores and it would be easy to confuse with with a deadly Conocybe.

Edit: This identification is wrong! It is actually Conocybe albipes, which has unknown edibility and is likely to be deadly poisonous.

are they? i mean i don't refute what you say, you're the expert here, but my finds that I ID'd (maybe misIDed) as Bolbitius vitellinus, look nothing like that.

was i wrong?

I find this species pretty often in grass in summer, second only to Pan foe. They came up in the morning and are pretty dried out by the afternoon. I always thought they were Bolbitius, but it is possible that it is something else. Doesn't quite look like a Conocybe to me, which is the only other rusty spored genus that grows in grass that I can think of off the top of my head.

Bolbitius do look a lot different when they dry out, they loose their viscid surface and most of the yellow, and get really frail. All the pics on the web are of much nicer specimens.

Looking out the window, I can see the dreaded lawn mower eating my "Bolbitius" patch. Good thing I saved some samples yesterday, I'll go put them under the scope and see what the spores look like.

Thanks for bringing this up. Anyone else have an opinion?

You both have Bolbitius Vitellinus.

The species varies a bit in stem and cap thickness.

i guess there's the difference in habitat too... mine were found on old manure piles his in a lawn. I've seen many like the ones he posted in similar areas, I just never thought they would end up being Bolbitius Vitellinus seeing as they look so different side by side....

wouldn't the gills likely be grayish to black for a coprinus though? i don't recall seeing any coprinus with brown gills before, although like i said i'm certainly not an expert... trying though :yesnod:

i'm with coon on conocybe lactea...
