Pan. Subbalteatus?(diff. from other post, pics)
    #707561 - 06/28/02 09:13 AM (22 years, 5 months ago)

Hello again. I made a thread yesterday with pictures of some mushrooms I found on my lawn, which, after taking a spore print, turned out to what I?m quite sure is Panaeolina foeniseci. Sorry for the mistake; I deleted my other post. It stormed pretty hard yesterday, and I went hunting in some nearby fields and pastures. I found some mushrooms that looked close to Panaeolus Subbalteatus, in that the gills seem similar, as does the stem, cap and spores. They were found in rotting hay, which, according to many different websites says is a good habitat for Pan. Subbs. I took a spore print of these mushrooms and it turned out blackish-purple. I am including pictures of the gills, caps, stems and spore print of these mushrooms. Hopefully one of you may be able to identify them. Thanks alot.

I am too Niggy. This is the first time I actually think I might have found some good shrooms. I'm stoked. I'm not going to eat any until I'm 110% sure that they are what I think they are. Hopefully someone else will reply with a sure answer.

Hi Flanders,
Congradulations,. After the pictures came up I recognized the neat shape of the underside of those shrooms and yes, they are Panaeolus subbalteatus. One fresh ounce is a dosage or three to five dried grams.

Enjoy. I use to make a tea of them becasue they are uh, yucky to the taste on the tingue trip. However, you lose much high when making a tea.

hava good time,

mj

Wet weight I'm estimating maybe 6 or 7 ounces. Maybe more, I'm not sure. I wish they were stronger, 3-5 grams seems like alot to eat dry. I might try some out tonight. I'm still kinda hesitant to eat 'em though, in fear that I might keel over and die. haha. There are more of the little guys out there, and I plan out going out again tomorrow for more.

Shroomsbury- I'm in Upstate NY. Hoping to find some Liberty Caps in the fall.

By the way, I have alot more now than in the above pics. I went out a few hours after posting and collected a few more ounces.

Nice job on those...I have found about a pound dry this month so far...all mixed panns...lot's of subbs and castaneifolius too. I have taken a bunch of photos that I will post next week some time...still using a SLR camera, need to get them developed..nice score.

Cheers

RIP Matt, your friendship and your contributions to the world of fungi will be missed. Unfortunately we never got to hunt together.

Niggy - Look in pastures, especially in places where there is hay strewn all over the ground, with manure mixed in with it. Thats where I found these, they love this habitat. I went back again this morning and picked probably another wet ounce. I left a bunch of small Subbs there in hopes that they get larger. I have a pretty important question- Since these subbs were in a mix of rotting hay/cow manure, do I have to boil them? I think I read somewhere that I should make a tea if they were in cow manure? Also, I picked two large subbs today, but they had already dropped their spores, and were on their way out. The cap is peeling and the mushroom looks dry and near death. Are this still alright to ingest? Thanks alot guys.

ps- I noticed some good blueing on the caps of the mushrooms I picked yesterday that are drying now.

Shit, I wanted to avoid boiling them. Should I boil them in a tea? How risky is it to just eat 'em? thanks for the reply Mr. Mushrooms, I appreciate it.

Thanks so much man. Sorry about all these questions. I have only one more before I ingest them. My friends and I agreed they smell sort of like very very strong mushrooms from the store(we smelled a whole ounce in a bag) and we might just eat them. What problems could result from eating them if they had bacteria on them? We will probably boil them, but I'd like to know anyways. Thanks alot.

Thanks dude. Last night, we boiled some water, and added the mushrooms. We let them sit for a few minutes before straining the water into the tea. After we drank it, I started feeling mild effects for about 2 hours. We were laughing alot, and I think my vision began to change a bit. But I think we underdosed. The first tea we made had about an ounce in (wet) and then we made more a little later, with probably a half ounce, and still we barely felt much. All the tea was split between three people, so I'm pretty sure we underdosed. Oh well, I'm going to try about a fresh ounce to myself tonight and see what happens. Thanks for the help everyone.
