I added some coir and verm to the mix, Its a big batch how long should i pasturize it, I am pasturising it at 170 in my oven right now

Its been a while since ive done this :mushroom2:

I hydrate to field capacity first, and then pasteurize in quart jars in a large kettle. If you're doing it in the oven, make sure it's in plastic bags so it doesn't dry out.

Stick a meat thermometer into the center of the manure, and give it an hour from the time it reaches 140F. Try not to let it go over 170F. I'd suggest upping the oven to 250F or so to speed things up. Still, water is a better heat transfer media than air, so it would work better in a pot of water.

Are you just monitoring the temperature of the water, and applying the same amount of time after it reaches 140?

I monitor the center of the jar or bag of subsrate. The water temperature is irrelevant because it's the substrate that we're pasteurizing, and it will always lag the temperature of the water.

Unless I'm missing something, RR, that sounds unnecessarily cumbersome. Why the quart jars?

I just heat 3/4 of a 5gal kettle of water up to 170F, then add dry poo until it's a very thick soup. Cap, wait an hour, the temp has fallen to 155, drain slightly, cool, and I'm good to go. That sounds like a lot of stuffing and cleaning. Why?
