Non-edible edibles?!?!

so, i found this really cool spot...canopy cover, flood plains, streams, underground streams, artesian wells, sandy banks, and lots of decaying matter on the floor of the forest. I was super EXCITED --until i rounded the corner and found this stuff. The tires were bad enough but what i found last will prevent me from ever considering ANYTHING coming out of here edible . I really wish someone would catch these fuckers and string em up by their nads.

i was about 2 miles into the woods when i found this, sad thing is the property is owned by the regional parks system in my area Has anyone else encountered this severe of a problem?! any pics? was it remediated? how? ________________________________ _________________________________
on another note: so after over 4 weeks with nothing more than a 15 min drizzle, we finally got some rain up here.

It's supposed to be back to 85 tomorrow morning, so i'm hoping that tomorrow will be a productive day.

On a side note, if you have a pickup, or a buddy with a trailer, you could go out there and clean it up. Call the park service ahead of time to let them know, see if you can meet them. That way, if they ever catch you mushroom hunting, they know you are cool, and won't mess with you. Not to mention you'll be helping to keep the environment nice.

i forwarded the pictures to the parks service as well as the specific area's councilman. I also sent a CC: to the head of the department that coordinates an annual cleanup of the larger stream which this watershed dumps into. The area is completely inaccessible by any type of passenger-vehicle due to the steepness of the ravines and lack of any access-road cut through the woods back there. On top of that, FREON is toxic and a carcinogen so handling it was out of the question. The biggest problem i foresee is a lack of willingness for the parks system to take responsibility for the costs of hazardous-materials cleanup for something they didn't put there. I offered my time for the annual cleanup on the condition that this area either be included in that project or made into a project of it's own. I sent these emails a week ago and have not heard ANY response as of yet.

Two things...
A) If it's inaccessible to cars, how did all that trash get there? Most of that stuff is portable to a degree, but carrying a full 55 gal drum of freon is not plausible.
B) Freon is only toxic if you ingest it. As far as getting it on you or your clothes, it's not a big deal. It's not really toxic, it causes mild irritation in low levels. Either way, it's best though to refer the freon to a hazmat certified agency, as they will have to dispose of it anyway.

"Short term exposure to fluorocarbon 113 can occur by inhalation, ingestion, and skin absorption. Inhalation and ingestion of fluorocarbon 113 will result in drowsiness, narcosis, central nervous system depression and significant impairment of manual dexterity and vigilance. Irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and skin can also occur. Breathing concentrations that are greater than 2000 ppm may cause irregular heartbeat or heart arrest. Concentrations that exceed 2000 ppm are considered as immediately dangerous to life and health. "
"Decomposition products of fluorocarbon 113 at high temperatures include hydrogen chloride, hydrogen fluoride, phosgene (a suffocating and highly poisonous, colorless gas, or volatile liquid with an odor of new mowed hay or green corn), carbon monoxide and alloys containing >2% magnesium."
(From MSDS)
The barrel was labeled FREON Fluorocarbon (aka Freon-113)
The largest concern is that this is getting into the natural watershed and water table in the area and being ingested by the wildlife and absorbed by the children who frequently play back in these woods. Who knows what else is back there, whoever put this stuff there wasn't concerned with hiding it...but as it appears to be a popular dumping ground, i'm sure theres a chance that others have taken more care in hiding their waste?!

Like I said, mild irritation.
Anywho, i still don't understand how it got there, if it's not easily accessible by vehicle.

the shopping cart perhaps? it's not accessible by 'passenger' vehicles, ATVs, however, would have no problem navigating the hills.

Freon evaporates at room temperature, so there is probably none left in that drum. I used to use the stuff to wash hydraulic fluid and grease off of F-14 radar antennas to help find leaks. It's a great solvent that evaporates very quickly. Bad for ozone, but otherwise pretty innocuous because it doesn't stick around very long.
I find trash like that all the time. Tires especially. Bluefoot likes to live under tires. I think its because the rubber helps them conserve moisture.
A lot of folks who live in the boonies don't have garbage collection service and there is often also a lack of appreciation for nature, probably because they see it every day. Stuck with trash they don't want and would have to pay to get rid of, they dump it over the hill. Out of site out of mind.

This site is less than a mile from downtown cleveland...within city limits. it's part of a MetroParks reservation.

Well, that's different. You should have no trouble finding enough people to help you clean it up. I used to hunt in the metro parks in Columbus. They were really nice.
