Re: a shamanic path: psychedelics vs. society [Re: thedudenj]
    #7067698 -

i know shamanism isn't solitary in that aspect, as community is key and healing is a main purpose. i will always have a community and i will never separate myself from it. i want to heal myself and others. i guess all i meant is shamanism is a lot about personal experience and i want lots of that.

sigh its not about the personal experiance of the shaman at all other then they have to know their shit before they start practicing on other people and must know themselve and the insides before they work on the outsides. a true shaman knows hes only an illusion and just an manifestation of the eternal light and nothing more.
the personal experience is that of the people being healed and those of the community. my community grows each month. the thing i suggest is everyone have their own sect and join in this and i mean the true practice of shamanism/medicine/healing/reiki/magery/ect. the more people working for the eternal light and truth the better. Its kinda like shiva man and the ultimate truth

so you think a shaman working 9-5 in a social atmosphere is not a hindrance? i don't know about you, but i see this as a hindrance in developing healing abilities.

I say do whatever works for you. Some people prefer solitude, while others like the company of others. I prefer a nice balance, though I tend to lean towards solitude. My privacy is very important to me, but I also like interacting with society.

It's kind of tough to associate with society when 99% of society are thoughtless, brainwashed sheep that don't even realize how little individuality they have.

i would just rather lean more on the solitary side, yet still maintain some interaction

I am going to answer you without reading any posts other than yours... So rest assured I am not re-stating what anyone else said(At least in my world).

First off... does society "interfere"...?

I guess that depends on your culture. Which of course boils down to where you are from etc...

Some cultures encourage/require the use of "psychedelics".

Part of being a shaman is being constantly involved with the people in your community. Like it or not... being a shaman is a "public servant" post. Saying that you want to have "nothing to do with" a certain segment of society is not a "shamanic path".

at the end of your post you claim that you now "need" society...

Now you have gone full circle...

Maybe you have taken the first step...

this doesn't really have any relevance to what im talking about. shaman path or not, that doesn't change what im trying to say. aside from the title of my post (my post wasn't intended to be about shamanism), society interferes with what i want out of my life.

at this moment in my life, yes i need society. i can't trip as much as i would like to because it interferes with work. and since it interferes with work it interferes with my connection to society. but once i get the career that i want i can't see this being a problem.

"society interferes with what i want out of my life"

We have Paris Hilton sentenced to 90 days in jail... cut down to 45... cut down to 22 and she serves 2 days before being taken out.

I stopped following the story at that point.

"society"

I can understand how it does not agree with you, as it does not agree with me either.

So you changed jobs to avoid it?

Why are we all so focused on changing ourselves instead of focusing on the real problem...?

Most old world Shamans did not use drugs. A small percentage, something like 10% did. Maybe a lil' larger, but not by much.

One of the most common ways Shamans altered reality was through Polyrhythms and dancing, along with rapid breathing.

You can try it too!

To enter an altered mindstate, simply put on some music with rapid rhythms, and breathe small breaths in and out in time with the drum beats. You will "trip" or enter a different mindstate. Get fucked up naturally! Whatever you want to call it.

I find though, often, that a Shaman is merely societal glue, the Rhythm Keeper, whether they know they are or not! I'm sure everyone has there own Shaman in their group of friends. I'm that person in mine.

I have Bozo names!

do you ever feel that society interferes with one's desire and ability to expand through the use of psychedelics?

i don't know about you guys, but i want to trip as much as possible during this life.  there is no "too much" for me.  there is only "too much" when i am surrounded by society.

that is why i want a career where i don't have to be around people.  like truck driving.  truck driving would give me the solitude needed to be able to trip out as much as possible.  call me a recluse or anti-social, but i have my friends and that is all i want.  i don't want to work around people i don't want to associate with.  i can't do a lot of psychedelics and be able to maintain that "mask".  it just doesn't work.  this is why i think a lot of psych junkies just say "fuck the working world" you know.

i used to do a lot of psychedelics, and i became pretty disconnected from society.  it was an enlightening experience, but it had to end because i need society right now.  i stopped using psych's and am now reconnected with society.  but i miss my past.  something is missing!

anyone have similar feelings?

does anyone else think life should be all about experience and that society is somewhat of an opposite path? :crazy2:

A real shaman makes use of societies attention. A real shaman is not a student of shamanism. Maybe during your student shaman years some solitude is required. I did it. Then as a shaman you have huge effect on society where you live doing in fact, absolutely nothing but just living there. A point once made to me during a bad time, by my lama, who had me hang out while he was negotiating with a redneck on Katrina reconstruction rates. The redneck treated all foreigns like shit. Just my presence toned his assholeness down a bit. Society has many factors and the shaman is the killer T cell. Working from within. The shaman's awareness circumscribes what can be known or experienced. Nobody else has the time to make the same careful study as the shaman once did from their direction.

Does the shaman have the techniques to transform this world?  This is the question I ask of others? And what stands in their way of doing them? For me the answer is one of mere money. With mere money I could establish Akanishta here in earthly experience for all sentient beings. How? I would pay some serious priests to use their skills to bring it about. Money talks. It's the show of faith now. The exchange of energy. I would buy heaven for you all.

The only problem is as always, you don't have the good karma to have me work on your behalf, or I would be rich.

To me, the quest is not the problem but realizing the goal for all. In this life I forgot so much. Thanks Devi for keeping psychedelics here for us.

ok... apolly has a very good point and i have to agree with him. Im deffinatly sick of how much people focus on drugs, they are pretty much a crutch for the medicine man or so called one. the only use they have is for drawing in the unreceptive and making them aware.

Just playing devil's advocate here...

How many "old world shamans" were exposed to the myriad of drugs we have today?
