science on the shroomery

I've been reading a lot of posts lately where people ask questions or make "theories" about the workings of the brain and other chemical processes. 9 times out of 10, these are theories that make no sense and rest on silly assumptions about the facts that would never hold up in a lab or a scientific journal. What if I replace serotonin with psilocin as a neurotransmitter? What if I feed diethylamine to an LSA-producing plant, why WOULDN'T that make LSD? And etc. Even worse is when someone insists that psychedelics are 100% harmless and any issues that arise are either a) latent schizophrenia or b) "Darwin's law." This also goes against currently known facts, and has the potential of damaging people.
I'm no expert in any of these fields myself (though I have an interest). All I'm trying to say here is, people, PLEASE do your research. I wouldn't mind these assumptions, if not for the fact that people refuse to let go even after someone explains to them that the science not only doesn't work but isn't there at all most of the time. Misinformation is dangerous and should always be fought, whether it's against drugs or for drugs. Drug prohibition lives on in part because people ignore science and vehemently believe what they want to in spite of scientific evidence to the contrary, but I see people here doing exactly the same thing here in a different way. I think this should be a place to educate and learn, not a place to manufacture even more bullshit and crackpot ideas about psychedelics that wind up hurting people.

Did you happend to catch that thread asking "is it the same laws of physics that cause a mushroom to grow like a mushroom cloud after a bomb"

I almost shit myself laughing... Yeah I agree, people need to research more, a LOT more.

I was just thinking about this. I don't know what to say in those threads. These baseless stoner theories just make me roll my eyes and want to tell these people to go back to school.

Sadly we don't seem to do very much to encourage or instill interest in the sciences in the US. Ipso facto the ignorance among the majority in regards to the sciences never really suprises me though it is always depressing.

Anybody ever watch Stephen Colbert? Because I see a lot of truthiness around here sometimes.
