if not Gymnopilus then Pholiota species?
nice little chicken. i hate waiting for those things to fruit. i often end up missing thier prime when they all kick out, seemingly at once because i get tired of checking up on them every few days and miss them for a week. it's like they grow at a crawl utill i leavae them alone.
also; yeah, i figured you where the bare-foot type. it must be hard to find shoes for racoons.

I have no idea, should have collected them for spore print but was occupied with other things.and yes it is hard to find shoes especially when you're a poor coon.

that was my impession as well.the reason I knew they werent was the lack of fibrils on the cap and they're softness.stems were nowhere near as tough, too.other than that they look a lot like a gym.

What makes you say they couldnt be gyms? there are a lot of species that arent well documented. Did you take spore prints?

You can see the orangish brown spores on the veil remnants. The flesh was softer than typical for Big Laughing Gyms, and they did not have the characteristic spicy aroma and bitter taste.
I think they might be Cortinarius.

Yeah cortinarius is a good possibility. Just don't truly know the species ya know? Theyre not all Gym. spectabilis.
I had these specimens looked at by shroomery members and Its for certain a species of Gymnopilus I just never found out which. I spore printed it too. Prints came back as gyms.

Gymnopilus identification is a bitch. in general, a few of the active species become easy to identify when you factor in a blueing reaction, but it also seems that it will be a long while before anyone agrees on a structure for the genus. everything just bouncing around and something changed every time i look.
