just wondering if cutting down the chance of contams would work by cooking the substrate at around 350f for a bit and boiling the water before putting it in the jars to sterilizie in a pot. Since water will only boil at 212f. just looking for input. i?m going to get a pressure cooker if my first try fails with the big pot.

it may help, but it's quite probably overkill. i know a number of folks that don't use pressure-cookers and don't have contamination problems - without even going through the extra steps you mention. i'm sure it can't hurt, however, if you feel like going through the extra effort....
i hate to discourage enhanced sterility, as it's such a key factor...

I've never PC'd. I use one of those stainless steel flower steamers (they are like a flower and open up and you set it in the bottom of the pan) Add water to the bottom of the flower steamer. Bring it to a boil then reduce heat to the lowest possible boil. Sterilize for 1.5hours. I've been doing this for a long time and I've NEVER had a contam. Zero none zilch. I am going to purchase a PC tho becuase im moving into grains.
