This Day In History - June 17, 1925
    #7058639 - 06/17/07 10:21 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

June 17, 1925 - Alexander Shulgin Birthday

Alexander "Sasha" Shulgin (born June 17, 1925 in Berkeley, California) is an American pharmacologist, chemist and drug developer of Russian descent.

Shulgin is credited with the popularizing of MDMA in the late 1970s and early 1980s, especially for psychopharmaceutical use and the treatment of depression and Post-traumatic stress disorder. In subsequent years, Shulgin discovered, synthesized, and bioassayed over 230 psychoactive compounds. In 1991 and 1997, he and his wife Ann Shulgin authored the books PiHKAL and TiHKAL on the topic of psychoactive drugs. Shulgin discovered many noteworthy phenethylamines including the 2C* family of which 2C-T-2, 2C-T-7, 2C-I, and 2C-B are most well known. Additionally, Shulgin performed seminal work into the descriptive synthesis of compounds based on the organic compound tryptamine.

He is currently continuing his work at home in Lafayette, CA, and is writing a new comprehensive psychedelic drug index. (*Info from Wikipedia)

Happy Birthday Sasha!

He's in a competition with God to see who can make more psychedelic molecules.

Most likely none as it's very likely that there are undiscovered ones.

But Shulgin is the only person who can say that he has taken every one that he's synthesized. He's a follower of the go-first approach.

<<Most likely none as it's very likely that there are undiscovered ones.>>

I wouldn't even say 'very likely'. More like there 'are' undiscovered ones. Probably thousands upon thousands of drugs that our primitive species hasn't been able to uncover yet.

I have read Pihkal and am reading Tihkal now. He truly is a chemical genius. He is currently writing an encyclopedia of all psychedelic drugs, making a movie (http://shulginthefilm.com/), and writing a book about a new set of compounds.

"Which new "target compounds" are you researching?

S: I am currently totally caught up with an earlier interest I had had with the relationship between the structures of the alkaloids of the cacti and the poppy world. Most of this I had never published, but now I am resynthesizing and getting spectroscopic definitions of many fascinating compounds. One hears about a psychoactive cactus, thinks of peyote and mescaline. One hears about a psychoactive poppy, one thinks of morphine. And then turns to another topic. But both families are treasure houses of some remarkable compounds called tetrahydroisoquinolines, and I hope to put these findings together into a new book in the near future."

He was also very systematic and safe about it. He didn't just snort a line of compound X. Compounds were first assessed for toxicity then gradually given in larger doses milligrams at a time.

He was truly a great man. I hope he wins a Nobel.

I for one, am thrilled about the movie. What a cool life to make a film on; they caught him just in time.
