On Being an Ass****
    #702356 - 06/26/02 05:58 AM (21 years, 9 months ago)

AHs are direct and to the point. You know where they are coming from. There is little pretense. Some people bemoan their lack of social graces. They would prefer to have someone smile in their face while stealing their wallet rather than listen to the AH telling them how naive they are for carrying a walletful of money walking in the wrong part of town.

AHs aren't pathetic little creatures trying to please everyone. No. They walk their own path proudly and rarely give a damn what anyone thinks of them. What IS important is what they think of themselves. The "pleasers" label them "arrogant, egotistical, cocky". All the while trying to manipulate others in an underhanded fashion by saying what the other wants to hear; even though it may not be their truth at all. They will do anything to belong.

My favorite AH, Will Shakespeare, summed it up thusly: "To thine own self be true."

Call 1-800-ASS-4653 for my kit on how you too can become an AH. Operators are standing by. Have your credit card ready.

I consider myself mostly a "pleaser" who can be an AH when needed. I believe balance and moderation is good for everything.
Someone who is an AH all the time in my opinion is just bitter, and will probably end up a lonely person devoid of true love.
And, like you said, someone who is a pleaser (all the time) could be seen as a "pathetic little creature" who gets walked on by others.
Neither of these things to the extreme is good. Being understanding, loving, and giving are good things, but not when you allow people to walk all over you; or steal your wallet while smiling into your face. I think it's good to be a pleaser, but to stand up for yourself and your beliefs when need be, even it that means being an AH.

I am a reformed "pleaser"- which we all know is the worst kind - (I have the foot prints on my back as proof) and have yet to rebalance. Bear with me for another thousand posts or two while I try to mellow out.

There is a thine line between being a "real" ass**** and telling it how it is, I like to walk it (elegantly). I am going to say what is on my mind and not mince words, but I am not going to go up to a fat guy and say "wow, you have really let yourself go". Know what I mean?

A person doesn't need to be an asshole to be blunt though...

Of course you wouldn't . The appropriate barb is "I see you have been working out..."

Assholes do have value.
I wouldn't disagree with you there.
But ( no pun intended) they hurt their cause more often than not by their attitude.
Being an asshole, rather than being about helping people wake up, is more about an ego-trip for the ahole. They would like to think they are shocking people into awareness, but they are mainly in it to draw attention to themselves.

The proof is in the fact that their outbursts usually only create a backlash rather than a move towards the belief they espouse. So if being an ahole doesn't move opinion in the ahole's direction, what is the payoff for the ahole? Answer: Ego-gratification.

Let's face it, people don't care what you know until they know that you care.
Being an asshole may get you a lot of attention, but the real work is done in the trenches by real men.
Anyone can knock down someone's sandcastle, not everyone can build one.

In the end ( no pun intended) what is needed is balance.
Unloving critics are as bad as uncritical lovers.

Having said all this, if you're gonna be an asshole, at least be an entertaining asshole.

If a person states, "I am calm and centered. Auummm...." and something as innocuous as a printed word sends them spinning out of balance, is this not a valuable lesson to the claimant?

Will the Master not tell you what you need to hear, not what you desire to hear?

Bottom line: can an AH be a Zen Master or vice versa?

Hmm... I have a quote for you (other than my sig).
"Now I had to look about me slowly for my peers, for those who, out of strength, would assist me in the work of destruction. Thenceforth all my writings are so much bait: perhaps I understand angling as well as anyone? If nothing was caught, I was not to blame. There were simply no fish. (italics his)"
