Aussie PM Howard prays for rain
    #7003049 - 06/03/07 11:58 AM (16 years, 10 months ago)

Wonderful! Yet another superstitious loon running a country.

Howard asks the Australian citizens to pray for rain after a long drought.

Naturally, this is always a win-win for religious folks.

No rain = God works in mysterious ways.

Rain = God responded to his flock.

Such a prayer demonstrates a belief in God's ignorance; i.e. he didn't know they needed rain and questions the fact of who/what caused the drought in the first place.

Sorry, I was using logic there - my bad.

What athiest hasn't prayed out of desperation? I don't believe in God, but tend to 'pray' to something/nothing/the void when the outcome of something important is not entirely in my hands. Why just yesterday I caught myself mumbling 'please let this be the house we will move into, and if it isn't, let something even better come up soon...' that's prayer, ain't it? Some like to call it 'putting your intentions out into the universe' or 'manifesting' something. Sure, whatever. I do it without really thinking about it. I don't care if it 'works' it makes me feel better.

What athiest hasn't prayed out of desperation?

I have to admit to praying at the porcelain altar the morning after a drinking binge.

oh god... oh god... I'll never drink again... oh god...

Do you have an actual opinion on the topic?

Is Howard's attempt at magic futile or likely to succeed?

Well, it will probably "succeed" in the sense that it's bound to rain eventually.

Vague response. Do you think his magick ritual (supported by millions of Aussies) will have a direct effect on the weather?

If it does rain within a short time frame, must we then accept their personal experience?

She was small and the picture was up against the wall so it took her two weeks until she realized she wasn't praying to Jesus anymore

taken out of context, and your assumption about millions of Aussies is bogus.

a magical ritual? what isn't a ritual?

who cares if people pray or not...who are you to judge and say it's right or wrong?

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

Oops! Overprayed [Re: kaiowas]

SYDNEY, Australia - About 5,000 Australians who evacuated their houses to avoid being swept away by rising floodwaters were allowed to return home Monday, while others downstream braced for the approaching torrent.

Authorities permitted the residents of Maitland, in the wine-growing Hunter Valley region, to go home as floodwaters from the swollen Hunter River subsided after peaking at 35 feet above normal height late Sunday.

Residents in the coastal city of Newcastle braced for the approaching deluge, which officials warned could cause some localized flooding.

"We're expecting ... possible evacuations," said council member Janet Dore.

Evacuation centers would be set up for residents concerned about the risk, but forced evacuations were unlikely, Dore added.

Prime Minister John Howard visited the storm-battered region on Monday, describing the area as "unrecognizable" after the region's worst flooding in decades.

"It is an illustration to me ... just how savage the storms have been and the tragedy of course is that there has been a loss of life," he told reporters.

Nine people were killed over the weekend as heavy rain and strong winds pounded the area from northern Sydney to the Hunter Valley, near the port city of Newcastle.

At the peak of Friday's wild weather, five members of the same family were swept to their deaths when a section of highway collapsed under their car, plunging them into a swollen creek.

Around 50,000 homes in the region were still without electricity Monday, as officials warned it could take days to restore power.

"We just want to tidy things up and we'll be in recovery mode for some weeks and months to come," Dore said. "It's been incredible - it's been quite devastating."

The Bureau of Meteorology has said the weather was expected remain relatively calm in the region for the rest of the week, allowing the massive clean up operation to proceed uninterrupted.

Seems God doesn't know when to stop with a good thing or he took the Aussie's prayers too literally as many forgot to tell him when to stop or how much rain was needed. Perhaps he was merely pissed that the faithful didn't trust him to bring rain in time and tried to force his hand with excessive petition.
