I thought I read somewhere that SSRI's have the opposite effect of MAOI's. Could be wrong though, wait for other responses.

So they decrease the effects of the trip?

SSRI's increase the available serotonin in the brain by inhibiting serotonin destroying enzymes. So, in effect, you will have excess serotonin taking up more serotonin receptor sites, thus creating competition for other serotonin-like molecules (such as psilocin). If your brain is already low on serotonin, SSRI's won't decrease the effectiveness of psilocin as much as they would in a brain with normal serotonin levels. In other words...there is no reason why someone would want to take an SSRI in combination with shrooms unless that someone already takes SSRI's for a medical reasons. Taking an SSRI after a trip *might* help if one was prone to bouts of depression after ingestion of psilocin. Also, SSRI's take a few days to even come close to reaching an effective blood plasma level to curb depression/etc. One of the quicker SSRI's would probably be zoloft (3 days - 1 week), and the longest probably being prozac (1 - 2 weeks).
The only combination I've heard where SSRI's could be beneficial is after an X run. X fires off massive amounts of serotonin (and dopamine, etc). Taking an SSRI after may help a little bit to ease the drop in serotonin levels for the few days after dropping X.

Bulemoon is right-on. SSRI's do not mix well with recreational drugs. SSRI's can completely abort some drugs such as LSD, Shrooms. Drastically decrease the magic of some drugs such as MDMA, Meth, D-amphetamine. And most important of all never mix SSRI's with the disositave anesthetics i.e. Ketamine, Dextromethorphan & PCP (I would stay away from Nitrous also because it is a Disositave anesthetic but I have not had personal experience with that one, the K, DXM and PCP I have had personal experience with and it is nothing nice when mixed with SSRI's) The SSRI & disosiative combination floods the brain with serotonin and creates a medical condition known as "serotonin syndrome". (In my case after mixing DXM with Paxil I had an extremely long trip which lacked the psycidelic feel or hallucinations and only produced an extremely stoned effect. It took two days before I could speak or see straight and any academic endeavor was impossible for about 5 days. However certain trycyclic antidepressants can dramatically boost the psycidelic effect of LSD and Shrooms. However trycyclic antidepressants have nasty side effects and I wouldn't play around with those unless I had researched the specific drug combination thoroughly. Before combining any drugs I would suggest going to Erowind's site and searching for the spsific drug combination in the experience vault. And if you have an exceptionally positive or negative drug combination experience do the drug community a favor and post it on erowinds experience vault. The post doesn?t have to be long just tell people what you think they should know. We are all scientist performing an experiment every time we put something in our bodies. Dedicated people have provided you with priceless information here in these forms and have probably even saved your life a couple of times (just imagine if no one had enough motivation to post shroom identification guides how many of you would be in the hospital waiting for a new liver) in other forms throughout the internet, do your part and give back to the drug community by posting your experiences you could save someone?s life or let them experience the magic you felt. I am sorry if this post seems like I am preaching but I feel that our reputation as druggies or whatever is perpetuated by some members of the drug community who constantly take and never give back. And if you have read this whole post thank you for your time.

Just as a side note...
"SSRI's increase the available serotonin in the brain by inhibiting serotonin destroying enzymes."
Actually that's what MAOI's do, inhibit the Monoamine Oxidase enzyme which is responsible for breaking down serotonin (along with quite a few other chems). SSRI's work by blocking serotonin reuptake into the releasing axon (hence: Serotonin Selective Reuptake Inhibitor).
But yeah, SSRI's will dull any of the serotonergic hallucinogens.

I thought Zoloft was an MAOI. Correct me if I'm wrong. Wouldn't long acting MAOIs make shrooms stronger? I've heard they make them weaker. Short acting MAOIs make them stronger for some reason though. I don't get it.

Thanks Trendal for catching that! Your right. Bluemoon <--banging head on computer screen. : ) Whap whap whap.
Zoloft is an SSRI. Its faster acting and has a shorter halflife of it's main competition - prozac. Withdrawal from going cold turkey on Zoloft is kinda nasty! Too many personal experiences from accidentaly forgetting to take a dose. So, I switched back to Prozac. And now its all changed once again...
I'm on Effexor XR, Adderall XR, Klonopin, and Viagra (just to get it up .) The first three drugs also have nasty withdrawal. Worse than anything I've taken yet, even heavy abuse of poppy tea.
I want my dirt cheap GBL back!!! I was able to stop all prescriptions by just using GBL as an antidepressant when needed. Fucking crooks in our government! They make it a schedule 1 drug, and then turn around and allow a drug company to make a profit off of it...AND AT THE EXPENSE OF MY LIVER, SEX DRIVE, MY WIFE, MY SANITY, OVERALL HEALTH, AND FINANCES. I love my country but hate the hypocrisy and greed in my government.
Sorry for ranting,

swim found that ssri`s only slightly reduce but alter LSD, mushies etc if the meds are stopped for a couple of days prior. SWIM also found that Psilocin containing mushrooms greatly staved off the brain-shock withdrawal symptoms. Has any SWIY found this so?

Are there any short acting SSRIs? Would be great for aborting a trip if it ever became necessary.

They take multiple days to build up and take effect. Not practical for that purpose.

Err, I'm pretty sure anyone on SSRIs will experience a reduced effect from psychedelics.
My friend, who's on Lexapro, experiences nothing on a full eighth of potent shrooms.

I tripped with my GF about a month ago. She is on SSRI's and I was quite reluctant about her dosage.
So I made a 3g tea. She drank 1/2 then 1hr later managed the other half. She had a 3 1/2 hr trip. Nothing too mind blowing but a decent trip. There was probably some tolerance issues after drinking the first half. Considering 3g for me (healthy,no meds) is quite the window opener she obviously had decreased effects. I would say they decrease by 1/3 - 1/2. These were psilocybe subaeruginosa , not cubensis for anyone looking for dosage info.

1/3 -1/2 seems way to high to me. i still have a bout a 2weeks worth of zoloft.. i might have to do an experiment. any thoughts on how i should conduct this... amount of time taking med b4, and after the SSRI trip? continue how long after? how long till SSRI free trip? dosage? etc?
anywho thought on possible Bupropions effects? this is what i normally take. so i have experience with it. won't comment on my experience just yet tho.

Pretty sure my GF was on Zoloft. Obviously it's hard for me to gauge exactly how hard she tripped.
I heard that it takes about 4days of not taking SSRI's for the effects to be %100. She took her SSRI about 9:30am and dosed about 1:30pm.
