Castaneda

Hello,

Could someone recommend which Castaneda book is best to start reading his works? Thanks for your help and input.

Reite

PS - I found an original copy of The Joyous Cosmology for $1.50 at a used bookstore I randomly wandered into the other day. I was just remembering that book a day previous....

i don't think it matters as long as you start with the first - teachings of don juan - and end with the last - the active side of infinity. then follow up by doing some web research on his life.

im reading The Teachings of Don Juan right now, its one of his early few books which describe his mind expanding datura, peyote (mescalito) and psilocybin experiences. Don Juan is a must read.

Castaneda lies his ass off about the "little smoke". Don Juan is 50/50 real experiences and bullshit. Don't get me started on the similarity of his "inorganic beings" and an autobiography an indian woman wrote. His books are progressively comprised of more BS after "Don Juan"

ANYWAY

He was a real sorcerer. I think it was Marlene Dobkin de Rios who wrote about him curing her son of an ailment.

Read his books in order as they build on past lessons from Don Juan.

yes i really did not understand the little smoke and the rubbing of the lizards on the temples. He mentioned that the mushrooms (ps. mexicana) were smoked...but smoking shrooms has almost no psychedelic effect, psilocybin disintegrates in the presence of heat. I absolutely loved his description of his mescalito encounters though. still a recommended read.
